A Panigale with toned down feistiness

Ducati always has had this insanity in them to time and again bring up machines that push the boundaries of two-wheeled glory, a boundary that will make every other manufacturer look like a speck of dust. For this alone, we must hand it to the Italian with all pomp and flair that they can literally pull off a true bloody special edition.

When it comes to sports bikes with full fairings, there are not many chaps in the world who make them better than these Italians. The Panigale, for instance, is the most coveted superbike for the way it looks, handles and rides. It is one of those Italian Exotics that can sweep you off your feet every time you get yourself near it. And if you do ride one, you know what a fearless machine it is, always wanting to break your spine due to the insanity, unless you tame it.

The current generations of Panigale is a bit intimidating and out-of-reach for a majority of buyers, due to its big and powerful engine and large denominations, in particular for riders who are new to the big bike world. It seems that Ducati has understood this fact, which is why it has come up with the all-new Supersport series, the re-entry of the brand into the family of Ducati. It takes in the 937 Testastretta motor and gets bolted on a relaxed sports bike trellis frame and gets the power lower in the rev range.

Borrows cues from the Panigale superbike
it was elected as the most beautiful bike at the EICMA 2016 show

Combining beauty with the traits of a beast is not an easy task. But that is not a context with Ducati. The Italian marquee has always amazed the enthusiasts in the past with its machines that hide a ruthless soul under their drop-dead gorgeous skin. The skin on this SuperSport is no less different. There is a reason why it was elected as the most beautiful bike at the EICMA 2016 show.

At first glance, you might easily get confused it with the Panigale as they are both kinds of identical, aesthetically. There are some definite styling cues taken over no doubt, but look close, and you will know that it isn’t even remotely close to the Panigale. Nonetheless, it is a beautiful machine that can never get you tired of its charm. In a stand or on the move, the SuperSport will be the best dressed amongst all the others in its class.

The mean front fairing with sharp and angular dual headlamps continue to catch your attention, even after being a four-year-old face. However, this SuperSport gets a new design on its headlight units that have a long ‘V’ DRLs above the dual headlamp pods. Sadly, the bike misses out on the striking LED headlamps. The fairing mounted rear view mirrors with integrated turn indicators are nicely done and ergonomically placed as well. The bodywork panel, being designed in the wind tunnel, can cut through anything like a Damascus sword.

Unlike the Panigale, the bodywork of the SuperSport brags the red trellis frame sneaking out. The fuel tank also gets a minor change in its contours but retains its dimensions. The tail section on this 939 is elongated to accommodate a pillion and gives the rider a longer and comfortable saddle too. As a welcome feature, this Ducati gets a convenient waterproof USB phone charger port underneath the seat. You also get a twin compact lateral silencer with two overlapping exits, which leaves the rear wheel with its “Y” spoke design, fully visible. Thanks to the single-sided swingarm.

The instrument console of this 939 makes way to the TFT to have an LCD blue lit display unit. Apart from all the tell-tale signage, you get ABS status, DTC status, DTC intervention, engine error (MIL), rev-limit, oil pressure and fuel reserve situations. Selected Riding Mode and corresponding ABS and DTC levels are shown at all times. As for entertainment is concerned, you get the Ducati Multimedia System (DMS) that lets the riders connect their smartphones via the Bluetooth and control some of its functions via the switchgear. The panel displays music player controls and earphone connection, incoming call and received message icons.

Testastretta, L-twin, Desmodromic 937cc engine
prancing with 113 hp and 71.5 lb-ft of peak torque

Sharing the powertrain combination with the Ducati Hypermotard 939 and the Multistrada 950, the Supersports gets the same four stroke, liquid cooled, Testastretta, L-twin, Desmodromic 937cc engine. The Desmodromic EURO 4 engine is prancing with 113 bhp at 9000 rpm and 71.5 lb-ft of peak torque at 6500 rpm.

This Testastretta, 11-degree engine, gets redesigned crankcase and cylinder heads to make the engine itself as a stressed member of the frame. Coolant re-routing through the heads and a specifically designed alternator cover accommodates a new gear sensor. The fully Ride-by-Wire system allows precise acceleration controls that work in tangent with the large 53 mm throttle bodies that end up with the exhaust system having a 2-1-2 layout.

Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) up/down
with auto-blipper

This powerhouse transmits all the power to the rear wheel via chain link connected to a 6-speed gearbox with gear sensor. It also makes use of an oil-bath slipper clutch that facilitates optimum rear wheel chatter during aggressive downshifting. This will allow the rider to take full advantage of the cutting-edge Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) up/down unit with auto-blipper that lets riders up-change and down change without using the clutch and without having to close the throttle to move up a gear.

The highlight of this engine is that 80 percent of all the torque is made available to the rider at a low 3000 rpm itself and from then on, higher revs are met with a decisive, linear increase in torque. This means the motorcycle can whip through corners with minimal gear changes and maximum riding enjoyment.

High set clip ons and revised footpeg positioning

The SuperSport is designed to do one thing. To offer a less aggressive and intense riding experience than the rest of the stablemates. For this reason, you get the high set clip ons and revised footpeg positioning to let you ride the bike more comfortably than any other sports bike in the segment. The aluminum handlebars are mounted on the top yoke, making adjustments visible and easy. The Plexiglas windscreen also is moveable, with 50 mm in adjustability for height.

Sporting a trellis frame, the engine is made use as a stressed member here allowing the makers to play with torsional rigidity, just perfect for bringing out the SuperSport’s superb dynamic performance. Moreover, this frame-plus-engine load-bearing configuration helps keep wet weight down to around 462 lbs. This light number helps to deal with excellent handling and stability, especially around corners.

The suspension units come from the top of the line OEMs featuring adjustable suspension and a single-sided die-cast swingarm. At the front, you get 43 mm Marzocchi forks with fully adjustable damping and pre-load on the SuperSport while the SuperSport S variant is bestowed with 48 mm TiN coated multi-adjustable Öhlins suspension set. At the rear, it is the Sachs mono shock on the SuperSport, and the ‘S’ gets a fully adjustable Öhlins mono shock with an integrated gas cartridge.

The characteristics of a frame designed with the utmost precision ensure that the race-inspired suspension offers superior balance in terms of stability and handling. At the same time, braking performance to ensure safe stopping. This 939 gets it all sweet and nice. The front wheel gets twin 320 mm discs, and radial monoblock Brembo M4-32 calipers whereas the rear have a 245 mm disc gripped by a 2-piston Brembo caliper. All of it is controlled by the Bosch 9MP ABS system with three mappings that prevent wheel lock and rear wheel lift-up, shortening braking distances and enhancing stability.

To build the most extreme sports bike ever in the history, just plain lightweight and a monstrous engine are no more enough. Electronics have been inculcated into every aspect of the riding styles and dynamics. Apart from the Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) and ABS systems, you get eight levels of Ducati’s traction control (DTC) programmed with a different wheel-spin tolerance. The DTC detects and subsequently controls any wheel spin, enhancing both bike performance and active safety.

Then there are three levels of Ducati riding modes for you to choose from depending on your style and location. Sport, Touring, and Urban modes deal with the different engine parameter and electronic control settings to adapt the bike to individual riding styles and different road conditions. Everything from DTC, ABS, DQS, and Ride-by-Wire can be manipulated with these modes.

For the Fireblade’s 25th anniversary, Honda has gone big with the updated engine, chassis, electronic suspension and a whole bunch of rider aids package all combined with the hefty weight loss giving the rivals a run for their money. This updated model from Honda is said to be an evolution rather than a revolution because close to 70 percent of the parts that make up this bike is completely new as opposed to the previous models.

This updated model from Honda is said to be an evolution rather than a revolution because close to 70 percent of the parts that make up this bike is completely new as opposed to the previous models. Gets a TFT screen and there has been a total redesign in the frame and chassis that loses 600 grams by thinning sidewalls which optimize material mass allocation.

Honda has continued its weight loss program with the engine as well by overhauling the motor for the 2017 CBR. The in-line four pot uses, for the first time, a throttle by wire control helping the power gain to 185-190bhp (11bhp more) while the red line now goes all the way up to 13000rpm from the previous 12250 rpm with peak torque of 81.79 lb-ft @ 10,500rpm. The compression ratio is up to 13.0:0 from 12.3:1. The power to weight ratio has increased by 14 percent.

The CBR1000RR is one of the few bikes that don’t go wrong in the handling department. They have always been touted as the best handling bike by enthusiasts. This updated model, however, ups the game by introducing a wide range of electronics aiding the rider into a more aggressive rideability and at the same time keeping him/her safer than ever.

Honda has now officially launched this product in our country and is priced at a staggering $16,499 (MSRP), and this is sure to make other players have a grim on their sales ($24,999 for the SP2 version).

The power-mill remains the same
which oozes out 197 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque

Touted as the sharpest and most track-focused supersport bikes you could get your hands on, Yamaha has updated their mad YZF-R1 and YZF-R1M superbikes with recalibrated equipment and a couple of new features keeping the competition alive and well. Taking one step closer to the true-blue racing pedigree of the M1, the 2018 R1 series will enhance rider experience by improving suspension, shifting and fuelling to be the "most sought-after supersport motorcycles designed to deliver the pinnacle of performance on and off the track".

Most of the updates are mostly underneath the skin, which itself gets a new Team Yamaha Blue on the R1 and a Silver Blu Carbon paint job on the R1M. The new Yamaha R1 comes bolstered with the same liquid-cooled, parallel four-cylinder engine which oozes out 197 hp and 82.6 lb-ft of torque. The engine is coupled to a 6-speed gearbox with slick up-shifts on tap.

For 2018, the folks at Yamaha have given the Quick Shift System (QSS) an “auto-blip” downshift technology that can now accommodate clutchless downshifts along with the up-shifts. And the best part of it all, the rider can disengage the function through the Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) settings found in the newly updated TFT instrumentation.

Yamaha will be charging $16,699 for the standard R1 and $22,999 for the limited R1M that has the new Öhlins Electronic Racing Suspension (ERS) with smart EC 2.

A Panigale with toned down feistiness

Each and every motorcycle in the stable of Ducati speaks of some purpose which is beautifully blended with the pinch of hardcore passion. And so is Ducati’s Supersport series which has been developed to make sport riding comfortable and more practical for city riding. It is basically a Panigale with toned down feistiness and less of the maddening monster of a powerhouse.

At the time of its unveiling, the 939 Supersport has already been praised a lot for its Panigale inspired design and a tastefully crafted fusion of a track-ready supersport like the Panigale and a sports tourer with comfortable ergonomics. All of this makes it one of the most high-end practical motorcycles once can buy from the stable of Ducati. Yet, it looks as gorgeous as all Ducati’s enjoy being.

True Italian style blends with an agile handling make this 939 SuperSports one to look out for in 2017. Guys, I strongly suggest you to start saving because this could be the game changer for Ducati.
