The new Energica Ego will be available for orders in 2015, but the company has released a preproduction model which is pretty close to the final version.

The new sports motorcycle represents a step into the future of electric two wheelers and is packed with a comprehensive list of modern technologies.

On paper, the Energica Ego’s specs look pretty cool. At its heart lies a permanent magnet ac (pmac), oil cooled motor that cranks out 100 kW available from 4900 rpm to 10500 rpm and 195 Nm of electric torque available at its peak from 0 to 4700 rpm. The engine can propel you to a top speed of 240 kmph and is powered by a set of 11.7 kWh batteries which offer a range of 150 km at a constant speed of 80 km/h or 50 km at maximum speeds.

For the moment, we don’t have the exact price of the motorcycle, but we can expect it to be somewhere around the $23,000 mark, which is a pretty decent number.

PERFECT BALANCE AMONG TECHNOLOGY, INNOVATION AND DESIGN

Energica Ego studio shot
Energica

This acclaimed electric superbike is equipped with a synchronous electric motor with permanent magnets, oil cooled, 100Kw of power, a top speed of 240Km/h, and an immense torque of 195Nm from 0 rpm to 4700 rpm.

The braking system is by Brembo and the ABS system is by Bosch. The state of the art ABS system is standard equipment and is a year in advanced of the incoming UE regulations for mandatory ABS.

The Energica EGO is equipped with a Vehicle Control Unit and an innovative multi-map system for energy management. It is the “brain” of our electric superbike. The VCU is mounted with two microprocessors to guarantee reliability, safety, and performance. The system is able to release maximum power at any time assuring full battery performance during the whole life cycle of the vehicle’s charge.

The control unit manages the regenerating braking system in conjunction with the ABS system. The VCU of the Energica EGO also keeps check of the battery efficiency when the vehicle is switched off.

The Energica EGO has an on board battery charging system of 110-220 V with a cable interface on the electric column. It will also be available with a recharge inlet for the FAST CHARGE DC Combo 2.

And add to the astounding technology of the Energica EGO, it also has a COBO color digital dashboard with a TFT active matrix, with GPS, Bluetooth and internet via LTE/UMTS/GPRS and internal memory and data logging.

“Energica – The Blog” and Energica Highlights

The Energica Blog: An active and forward thinking community who discuss their opinions and thoughts about various topics will feed this diary on the net, aimed at creating a real time online diary on electric culture and mobility.

With the blog posts, the reader will be able to approach and share this new kind of mobility, with others who have chosen electric vehicles, with articles, interviews with electric technicians, get real world advice, and comment or suggest new topics by all social networks.

The blog will also create a charging station map that will be added inside “Energica Highlights,” an App developed in collaboration with Map2App.

The “Energica Highlights” app is dedicated to sustainable mobility and combines the most beautiful motorcycle roads in the world with the nearest charging stations. The app is available for Apple, Android, Java and wip for Blackberry.

THE ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE IS QUIET.

FALSE. The Energica EGO creates a sound like the thrust of a jet turbine that will amaze. This is due to the straight cut final drive gears similar to the drive train of a F1 racecar.

CAN THE ENERGICA EGO GO FAST EVEN WITHOUT THE GEARBOX?

TRUE…And is faster. Electric motors provide massive torque, and are direct driven with a constant smooth powerband. The electric motor enables the vehicle to obtain constant high performance from 0 rpm up to redline.

(Electric car manufacturers use the same drive technology). The speed from 0 to 100 km/h is just over and incredible 3 seconds. And not having to shift gears makes acceleration that much smoother and faster. The absence of the gearbox also makes riding the motorcycle easier and much safer.

Without having to find gears and think about shifting, the rider can focus their attention on the certainty of having all the necessary power to enjoy the gradual acceleration while carving a curve, and thus, the pure pleasures of riding.

THE EXCITEMENT OF CHANGING GEARS, FEATHERING THE CLUTCH IS GONE AND THE LACK OF A TRANSMISSION CAN REDUCE THE EXCITEMENT AND PASSION OF THE RIDER.

FALSE. It is hard to compare electric vehicles with the endothermic ones because the combustion engine achieves torque on a gradual curve that requires higher revolutions to obtain maximum performance. However, the electric motor behaves much differently. Maximum torque, the power transmitted from the wheel to the ground, is amazingly 100% from 0 to 5000rpm. If you have only experienced ICE power in the past, electric power will astonish you.

In addition, with no transmission gears, clutch or shifting, the process of searching for the “right gear” and RPM is eliminated allowing for full concentration on braking, cornering line and acceleration. The excitement of riding an electric motorcycle is more power, less work and feeling instant torque.

HOW LONG DO BATTERIES LAST AND CAN THEY BE RECYCLED?

TRUE. We are working on the “Second Life battery project”. A solution that will enable people to rent/lease the battery. In this case, for a small monthly fee you will have your battery replaced after a period of time and your vehicle batteries will be new!

ARE YOU CREATING A NAKED VERSION?

TRUE/FALSE. Currently the Energica EGO will be available in Arctic White and Matt Black. As for a naked version … we will see?

History

The Energica brand is the brainchild of the CRP Group, a name you might not be familiar with, unless your a Formula 1 racing team, or a top Italian Supercar company. CRP has been supplying the worlds most high performance automotive builders with engineering, rapid prototyping and advanced materials to build the worlds fastest and most advanced cars for over 40 years.

It all started in post war Italy when Roberto Cevolini’s father, Salvatore, an inventor, started building the worlds first home espresso machine. But he made his mark as he helped rebuild his homeland. War torn Italy could not be rebuilt because there was a shortage of materials, most notably - bricks. But Cevolini invented a machine that could reconstitute old bricks from bombed out buildings, by refurbishing them into a new size and shape to be re-used and thus rebuild the landscape once again.

Roberto Cevolini, learned well from his father and became a first rate inventor and engineer, and in 1970, started Roberto Cevolini & C. snc. Their main activity was the production of bleeding edge components for Formula 1.

In 1996, again with the apple not falling far from the tree, Franco Cevolini, the son of Roberto, with his degree in Materials Engineering, formed CRP Technology as an R&D department of Roberto Cevolini & C. The company developed proprietary knowledge in Investment Casting, then also began to develop the 3D printing process and invented the material, “Windform”, which revolutionized the 3D printing world.

In 2003, Roberto Cevolini srl merged with CRP Technology to form one of the greatest companies in high end automotive engineering.

Racing operations came under their own banner as demand and business kept growing, to see CRP Racing specifically formed in 2006.

Then, when European speed wasn’t enough, 2008 saw the formation of CRP USA which dove headfirst into the world of Stockcar racing, and right in the heart of it - Mooresville North Carolina.

Today the company has grown to three groups - CRP Meccanica, CRP

Technology, and CRP Service. All three units work together as a team to collaborate with CRP Racing and CRP USA, to form one of the worlds leading edge high performance automotive companies. And through this synergy, the idea for the next thing in high technology and speed was born - Energica. The worlds first Italian racing bred - electric superbike.
