STYLING

Harley-Davidson Fat Boy Harley-Davidson Fat Boy 30th Anniversary Limited Edition

Low, wide and intimidating. Ever have these been the hallmarks of the Fat Boy line since its launch in 1990, and it’s still true of today’s subjects. Post 30 years of a bodacious run, the Bar & Shield brand is celebrating it with a limited run affair cloaked in Darth Vader style, complete with gentle touches of bronze.

Up-front, the comfortable swept bars, mirrors, and the controls are perched in Vivid-Black, and so is the headlamp nacelle and the beefy 49mm Showa Dual Bending Valve front forks. The sloping fuel tank with the instrument console mounted on it gets the premium 3-D waterslide Fat Boy logo in the new bronze-tone complimenting the black finishes.

Up-front, the comfortable swept bars, mirrors, and the controls are perched in Vivid-Black

The bike gets a high mounted handlebar like on the old school cruisers of the yesteryears, and the 18-inch, solid-disc Lakester rims are just simply so cool. These also get the satin-black finish with machined edges. The beefy front end sees a clean design with squared-off LED-DRL cluster and the classic beercan skirts covering the swept area of the inner fork tubes – that is some staunchy appeal the Fat Boy has always carried.

All the instrumentation is in the tank-mount console, sloping down like the old hardtail boys of yore. The wide pillion pad tapers over the bobbed rear fender, making a pillion rider beg for cushy support for longer rides. Below that is an LED bar tucked in neatly with the standoff turn signals mounted on the side-mount number plate holder.

119 ft. lb Mil-8 114 motor finished with a blacked-out look

Giving more oomph to the demeaning 2020 Fat Boy is Harley’s biggest mill fitted onto its cruiser - the Milwaukee-Eight 114, which came as an optional package for the previous FY model. With ten pound-feet of torque more, Harley claims it will still maintain 47 mpg like the Mil-8 107 motor.

This 30th Anniversary edition will come fitted with Harley’s 45-degree V-Twin 119 ft. lb Mil-8 114 motor finished with a blacked-out look and glossed black engine covers. The lower rocker covers and timer cover script gets the subtle bronze-tone, while the dual exhaust pipes are finished up in Onyx Black – “a durable physical vapor deposition paint finish that reveals the underlying chrome in bright light.” Fancy!

The 114 Milwaukee-Eight gets re-tuned ride-by-wire system and more sensitive knock sensors for gaining all the torque on offer. A 6-Speed Cruise Drive Transmission and a slip and assist clutch provides the rider smooth shifting of gears that help in maintaining fatigue-free long rides.

RIDE AND HANDLING

the headlamp nacelle and the beefy 49mm Showa Dual Bending Valve front forks gets vivid-blacked

The 2018 Fat Boy received the largest ever chassis rework making it stiffer and lighter at the right places with a pretty cheeky faux-rigid swingarm giving the proportion box a tick. This overhaul gave the Softail machines new comfort and maneuverability impressions, better than ever before. The 30 degrees of rake gives the Fat Boy 4.1 inches of trail along with great stability and tracking.

The rest of the chassis and mechanical equipment remains unchanged with the beefy 49mm Showa Dual Bending Valve front forks front and rear suspension with easily-adjustable emulsion shocks. They can be adjusted with just a turn of a knob, and bigger pins will give improved damping performance. Braking is handled by 32 mm, 4-piston fixed front and rear Reflex Linked Brembos’ with ABS that catch on to a single 320mm discs.

Unfortunately, at 699-pounds wet, a single-disc set up at the front may be too less of a power to bring this hauler to a halt quickly. But then, no denying what the no-disc-look does to the 18” solid rims. It’s pure unadulterated drool source. There are no ride modes yet, unlike the Indian folks. Sad.

The dark and stealth, as usual, get blacking out just about everything apart from the exhaust. It carried around the same panache and poise of the epoch Chief, a motorcycle that leaves no question of having a prominent place in the lineup of this historic brand that knows retro indulgence.

Now, it receives premium gloss black finishes on the engine, including the primary, valve, and cam covers, push-rod tubes, as well as on the exhaust and saddlebag hinges. New features also include three ride modes (Tour, Standard or Sport) – selectable on the fly. Other key features include ABS, cruise control, keyless ignition.

An all-new Rear Cylinder Deactivation technology for the Thunder Stroke 111 will automatically deactivate the rear cylinder when the bike is at a standstill, resulting in less engine heat for improved comfort in slow-moving or stopped traffic. The 2020 Indian Chief Dark Horse will be available in Thunder Black Smoke and will be priced at $18,499.

FINAL THOUGHTS

It will be limited to 2,500 examples

Originally, the Fat Boy charmed through everyone’s radar when it cruised around Los Angeles in the blockbuster feature film, Terminator 2, ridden by another blockbuster star – Arnold Schwarzenegger. It’s been three decades since that happened, and even today, it has been one of the most physically imposing motorcycles in the Harley-Davidson portfolio.

This 30th anniversary limed edition boulevard bruiser gets a monochromatic treatment that dominates right from the get-go. A brutishly dark theme, in addition to the lineup of full-chrome models, demands a kick of attitude and character, unlike any other Softail models.

With the Mil-8 114 motor pumping out more power and torque, we only wished Harley would have considered equipping it with some traction control or power modes by now.
