A jazzier take on the original 1200 for an “authentic retro styling”

Unveiling the brand’s FTR1200 street tracker back in 2018, Indian begun the onslaught of looking elsewhere for their inspirations other than just making vintage charmers and majestic cruising machines. Writers have been poetic on the FTR’s performance capabilities and how beautifully different it looks with the aggressive stance, and just about everything else.

From an optional “rally” package, which came along with that 1200 FTR, Indian deemed fit to unveil a product on its own for 2020. This RALLY is a grownup FTR 1200 developed for both everyday ride comfort, as well as, to muck up some dirt. It does all of it while rolling with an authentic retro styling, modern performance, responsive handling, and upright ergonomics.

P.S. This FTR RALLY is only for India’s European, Middle East, and the Asian markets.

The 1200 FTR was originally inspired by Indian Motorcycle’s storied history and success in flat track racing on the championship-winning FTR750 race bike that has dominated American Flat Track since it was introduced in 2016. The 1200, however, came with a minimal front end, LED lights, mirrors, and a license plate mount to make it all street legal.

The FTR RALLY gets kitted up for 2020 with the stuff that came in as an optional package for the 1200 last year. The new additions include taller ProTaper Rally handlebars, low windscreen with subtle & elegant graphics, a wide brown aviator seat, USB fast-charge port, LED headlight, and a new Titanium Smoke paint job with big Indian Head logos.

Indian engineers played a neat trick to locate the fuel bladder under the seat
In an effort to lower the center of gravity

The stock rims are replaced with a retro aluminum spoke wheels with red pinstripe wearing blocky dirt-ready Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires. The RALLY can be further uplifted with more than 40 accessories from Indian.

It carries the dual exhaust in a sharply upswept fashion, and still retains the bare-bones look of the original 750 with the peeking Trellis purposefully left out in the open. In an effort to lower the center of gravity, Indian engineers played a neat trick to locate the fuel bladder under the seat, and the visible fuel tank is technically a partial lie. Sneaky!

The rear ends up crisp with the saddle hung in the air, thanks to the tire hugger mounting the plate and turn signals. Both ends see a distinctive LED lighting package keeping the retro-ish FTR RALLY modern. The RALLY gets broader LED turn signals for markets it is intended for. The instrumentation is the same round analog unit seen on the 1200, and not the 4.3-inch Ride Command LCD touch screen with Bluetooth compatibility like the "1200 S". That would’ve been a nice addition to the RALLY.

POWERTRAIN

liquid-cooled, 60-degree 1,203 cc V-twin. Slip-assist clutch
120 ponies and 89 pound-feet of torque

The same liquid-cooled, 60-degree 1,203 cc V-twin that runs on the FTR will be putting out 120 ponies and 89 pound-feet of torque on this RALLY. Thanks to the over square layout. An electronic closed-loop fuel-injection system handles fuel delivery while maintaining fuel efficiency and emissions standards, still while huge 60 mm dual-throttle bodies feed this monster. Like all Indians, power delivery, refinement, and aural quality coming out of that upswept exhaust pipes are top-notch and throaty.

Similar to the FTR750 race bike, the airbox is positioned directly above the engine to optimize airflow and maximize power. Additionally, the engine makes wide use of magnesium to lower weight and utilizes a low-inertia crankshaft that allows the engine to rev to its redline quickly for thrilling acceleration. A flat torque curve and a 12.5:1 compression ratio ensures a progressive and predictable power delivery with loads of low-end punch and flexibility.

Power flows through a slip-and-assist clutch to give a lighter lever pull and to minimize wheel hop during aggressive downshifts. A six-speed transmission does its thing and drives the rear wheel with a chain drive.

RIDE AND HANDLING

Just like the 1200, Tubular steel members make up the nimble Trellis frame, which is both form and function with being beefier than the 750 tracker’s to haul the larger powerplant and overall a heavier design. The long 5.1-inch trail gives in for crisp handling and relatively eager cornering performance. The brown aviator seat and the 50mm higher handlebar provide for a comfortable upright riding position. Seat height is variable and can rest at 31.7-inches or be bumped up to 33.1-inches.

The chassis equipment remains the same with a 43mm inverted front suspension with radially mounted dual 320mm Brembo 4-piston caliper brake unit at the front. The swingarm carries a monotube IFP unit with a single 265 mm disc clutched by a 2-piston Brembo caliper. Enough power to stop this hooligan going off.

This particular 2020 FTR Rally was launched only for the European, Middle Eastern, and Asian markets and will not be available in the US—for the time being, anyway. The 40 plus accessories package will include the much needed stout radiator guard, a skid plate, and more.

If and when it comes to the US dealerships, expect it to carry a price tag of $19,228. This is the same price for the Optional Rally package that comes on the 1200.

Giving away the off-roader style is the marauding frame and suspension along with the 19-inch spoked wheels. Evidently, the bike is surrounded with features that highlight the bike’s capability, such as type-approved headlight mesh guard, the high mudguards, chain guard, and, of course, the engine skid plate. The fact that the engine, exhaust with the dual tailpipe, and the suspension is totally exposed is why this Scrambler gets the raw factor from the design team. Kudos to them.

The loveable air-cooled 803cc motor is bolted to the steel trellis frame, and the Euro 4 compliant engine develops 75bhp at 8,250 rpm and 50 lb-ft of peak torque at 5,750 rpm. Although it is the same motor, riders can expect this Desmodue engine to deliver simple and accessible bands of power on any terrain. The Desert Sled gets a tough 46 mm upside-down Kayaba fork that is fully adjustable with increased travel of 200mm with preload and rebound damping. The rear also gets Kayaba shock with a fully adjustable preload. Braking system mounted on this bike is the promising 4-piston Brembo M4.32B monoblock caliper with a radial attachment that bites the single 330mm disc at the front and a 245 mm at the rear.

The original 1200 was the face of Indian’s all-new flat-tracker platform. Carrying the same lines and form language as the FTR750 and the 1200 Custom, riders all around the world fell in love with it for its performance, aggressive stance, host of premium features, and ride-enhancing technologies. These bikes have gone through a rigorous, multi-year design and testing process to ensure that they perform as good as they look.

This FTR RALLY adds on to the retro styling with the laced rims and studded tires showing off its intent. With the brown saddle and taller handlebars, this flat track just got more comfortable to take on the dirt and the straight asphalts, all with the same panache.

Of course, we have the original 1200 FTR that comes with the Rally as an optional package along with the Sport, Tracker, and the Tour collections.
