E-Motor

A revolutionary new brushless permanent magnet synchronous electric motor delivers 16 kW (21,5 hp) of peak power with 42 Nm of torque, placing it in competitive range of similar sized combustion engine driven motorcycles.

The high powered Engine Control Unit (ECU) is the FREERIDE E engine’s "brain". A water cooled ECU ensures instant yet usable power delivery in all riding conditions. Radiators ensure the electric motor casings and ECU are kept cool, ensuring optimal performance for your entire ride.

Battery

The KTM PowerPack – a die-cast aluminium casing houses 360 lithium ion battery cells and the BMS (Battery Management System). There’s enough juice for about one hour of riding (dependant on riding style and terrain type). Just flip up the seat and loosen four bolts to swap out a depleted ‘Power Pack’ with a charged unit.

Bodywork

Sleek and minimal bodywork - a perfect fit between rider and motorcycle for exceptional control and ease of movement.

A long, slim seat allows unrestricted freedom of movement and excellent comfort. The seat of the FREERIDE E-XC model has slightly higher foam at the rear for increased comfort. With a conveniently low seat height of 900 mm, the FREERIDE E aids rider balance and improves control. To further lower the seat height if needed, a KTM PowerParts kit is available that reduces the suspension travel by a further 25mm.

Suspension

As the leading off road motorcycle manufacturer, KTM chooses premium WP suspension for it’s full range of race machines. WP upside down front forks and PDS rear suspension offer 250 mm of travel on the FREERIDE E.

Lightweight wheels with high-end anodised aluminium Giant rims are fitted to CNC machined hubs with lightweight aluminium spoke nipples. These ultra-light wheels are hard to beat in terms of weight and still guarantee the best stability and safety. The FREERIDE E’s MAXXIS tyres offer a traction-enhancing mixture of softness and high-quality for excellent grip.

Subframe

The FREERIDE E’s unique frame features a chrome-moly steel top section braced by bolted aluminium profile elements. The lower section is braced by the motor and has an aluminium base plate to deliver optimal stiffness, control and safety – even on jumps!
The fiber re-inforced polyamide subframe is incredibly light, yet strong and durable.

Street Legal Models

The FREERIDE E-XC and FREERIDE E-SM feature lights, indicators, mirrors, an ignition lock and steering lock – making it practical for road registration. With a power output of 11 kW and weight of 110 kg the FREERIDE E-XC and FREERIDE E-SM meet A1 beginner driver’s license requirements.

Quotes

“KTM is finally ready to bring its electric dirt bike, the KTM Freeride E, to the general public, after pump-faking the machine at EICMA three years ago. During that rather large time gap, KTM has realized the errors of its initial design, and has since opted for a liquid-cooled PMAC electric motor, which puts out 21.5hp and 31 lbs•ft of torque.
The Lithium-ion battery pack has also been refined, and is now easily swapable (lift-up the seat, and unscrew four screws). With about an hour’s worth of riding time, according to the KTM wristwatches, the integrated battery and BMS unit has 2.6 kWh on-board, and fully charges in 80 minutes (80% in 50 minutes) when hooked up to the KTM quick charging system.” ----- Asphalt and Rubber

“First revealed at the 2011 EICMA show in Milan, the Freeride E has undergone a lot of testing at off-road parks around Europe. From this prolonged development period, KTM will now bring to market the Freeride E-SX motocrosser and the street-legal E-XC enduro. The two models are essentially identical, with the E-XC adding lights, turn signals, mirrors, an ignition lock and a steering lock.” ----- Motorcycle Blog
