The Old New-School Boulevard Bruiser

Around the turn of the century, the cruiser style had evolved into fat tires, lots of chrome, wide bodies and pegs out front to give you that almost slouched, relaxed riding posture. Since then, cruiser style has cycled back to "old school." They’ve lost some weight and slimmed down, creating a low and lean version of a sport look. If your vision of what a cruiser should be is stuck in the fat tires and wide body — think of it as "old new-school" — Suzuki has the Boulevard M90 that’s right up your alley.

The Epitome Of The ’Boulevard Bruiser’

Introduced as the bad-ass brother of Suzuki’s M109R, the Boulevard M109R B.O.S.S. carries forward into 2019 with its 109 cubic inch (1,783 cc) engine. Yeah, B.O.S.S. stands for ’Blacked Out Special Suzuki’, but I’m gonna call it ’Blacked Out Super Sweet’. It might not be the fastest cruiser on the market, but it is definitely a power-cruiser and it really wants to go when you let out the clutch.

Middleweight Cruiser and Tourer

Suzuki unveiled its Boulevard C50 back in 2005 after renaming its “Volusia” bike of prior model years. The C50 and C50Ts carry straight into 2018, with a mid-displacement engine to serve as Suzuki’s mid-size cruiser and weekend tour bike. Smooth acceleration and comfortable seating combine with laced wheels and classic styling to keep the C50s on the list of middleweight contenders in the two-wheeled market.

Your Basic No Frills Tourer

Cruisers and touring bikes go hand in hand for that relaxed, comfortable ride you get. The Boulevard C90T from Suzuki — absent for 2014, but back in 2015 - is the touring version of the C90 that was dropped after the 2013 model year, though the C90 B.O.S.S. is still going strong in 2018. Leather-look — not real leather, just leather textured — hard saddlebags and an ample windscreen give the C90T that "I’m ready for the road" look along with a 1,462 cc engine and five-speed transmixer. Is it ready for the road? I wanted to see if, in fact, the "T" in C90T really does mean "touring."

A Muscle-Bike Look With A Tame Attitude

Suzuki’s Boulevard M50 cruiser carries into 2018 with more of that custom American style that made it popular ever since it evolved from the old Intruder. Low-slung good looks join the 42-horsepower, 805 cc V-twin and faux-rigid frame for a package that’s meant to drive the imaginations of entry-level riders who might appreciate the style but be uninterested in worshiping at the Altar of Harley. Moderate power and a low seat height makes it appropriate for the young and/or inexperienced, and the lack of excessive electronic fandanglery makes it relatively easy to service and maintain, which is always a bonus for the uninitiated. Join me while I check out the rest of the details on Suzuki’s mid-size cruiser.

If You Wait Long Enough, Everything Comes Back In Style

Suzuki pushes the venerable Boulevard S40 line into the 2018 model year with naught but a few extra touches to the paint. In fact, little has really changed with this ride since it came out in 1988 under the LS650 “Savage” moniker, and that honest simplicity is one of the main draws for this compact sled. Unfortunately, therein lies one of its biggest flaws as well. Air-cooled and carbureted, I imagine its low 652 cc displacement is the only reason it is able to meet emissions, and I fully expect tightening regulations to eventually strangle this line. At the very least, said laws may force it into the 21st century with fuel injection and a water jacket and radiator, but that’s speculation. Today, I’m going to delve into what we know to be true and take a look at the brushed-up S40 as it sits for MY18.

2015 Suzuki Boulevard S40

Lightweight cruisers have always been a staple in Suzuki’s motorcycle lineup, as shown by the longevity of the Boulevard S40, even if it didn’t always carry that name.

When Suzuki began building lightweight cruisers in the mid 80’s, the bike was christened with the name “Savage.” That name lasted until 2004 when Suzuki decided to give it a clean slate. Part of that clean slate was renaming the bike, which of course led to it now being called the Boulevard S40.

Whatever name it goes by, the Boulevard S40 has stood the test of time, largely because it gave customers a chance to experience multiple styling and handling segments in just one bike.

In a lot of ways, the Boulevard S40 carried that versatility with it proudly. Some folks refer to it as an entry-level cruiser, and while its lightweight characteristics does lend some fact to that belief, the Boulevard S40 also has that classic retro Americana look that fits right in with those hulking cruisers of yesteryear.

Performance-wise, it’s not the fastest and most powerful bike in the world. Far from it, really. But what it lacks in power, it more than makes up for in a lot of things.

2012 Suzuki Boulevard S40

In terms of design, the Suzuki Boulevard S40 comes in a very attractive package, influenced by larger Boulevard models. You only need to take one look at it to realize that it bears a striking resemblance to an S83, except that it comes with "only" a single-cylinder engine. The classic design exudes a retro-vibe, particularly the ergonomically-designed handle that’s both easy to grip and comfortable to use, especially when you’re throttling out on the open road. The Boulevard S40 also comes with a custom flat handlebar design and custom-style rear view mirrors, both of which provide a very aesthetically-pleasing appearance to the bike, as does a sleek, one-piece saddle with a low seat height of just 27.6", making it an ideal bike for novice riders.

It may look the part of a svelte and agile cruiser, but make no mistake, the Boulevard S40 packs a mean punch, thanks to a 652cc, four-stroke, air-cooled, OHC, single-cylinder engine with a TSCC (Twin Swirl Combustion Chambers) cylinder head and high mass crankshaft, producing strong low-end power and torque. A smooth-shifting 5-speed transmission is complemented by a low-maintenance belt-drive system that’s quiet, durable, and simple to adjust and clean, while an electric starter with automatic decompression system has also been installed, allowing for quick and easy engine starting. Lastly, a precision electronic ignition system brings all the power in and out of the bike at an impeccably sharp rate.

Handling is also a key component of the Boulevard S40, especially when it comes to its chassis and suspension set-up. A 19" front tire and a wide 15" rear tire provides the classic cruiser look while coming with a hydraulic front disc brake and a drum-type rear brake, providing strong, reliable braking performance.

Tokyo 2009: Suzuki presents three world premieres

Suzuki released BURGMAN FUEL CELL SCOOTER, GLADIUS400 ABS and BOULEVARD400 as its world premieres at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show 2009 on October 21.

The fuel cell of BURGMAN FUEL CELL SCOOTER is air-cooled and concomitantly light, compact, and structurally simple. A 70MPa hydrogen tank (the highest-pressure tank used on a bike thus far) allows a usable riding range. And the tank is mounted within a robust frame for safety.

The Gladius 400 ABS is a stylish naked bike with a 400cm3 V-twin engine. It features a truss frame that combines rigidity with great looks. And its newly designed V-twin engine delivers plenty of power in a rider-friendly way.

The Boulevard 400 is a performance cruiser with aggressive bikini-cowled looks and a 400cm3 engine. Low, flowing body lines that give an unmistakable sense of performance are combined with inverted front forks and stylish cast wheels. The engine is a narrow-angle (45°), liquid-cooled V-twin with fuel injection.

While the Boulevard S83 doesn’t carry on as a 2009 model year, Suzuki is keen on their smaller model, the Boulevard S50 which proved very successful during its decades-long life and shows no signs of weakness despite the fact that the Japanese manufacturer doesn’t work its magic on it for 2009. Fuel injection isn’t considered necessary so all there is new to enjoy at the Suzuki Boulevard S50 is a color scheme.

Classic cruisers are less likely to go out of fashion and implicit out of production as long as there are enough guys that prefer classic jeans, leather jackets and helmets instead of leather interiors and fancy onboard computers. That’s what Suzuki reckons and some of the best proofs of this fact are the 2009 Boulevard C90 and C90T models which keep on going in the style that consecrated the VL 1500 Intruder more than a decade ago.
