More about the Suzuki V-Storm
Suzuki’s V-Strom line offers a 1,037 and 645 cc motorcycles with various levels of travel/adventure equipment to those seeking a reliable, no-surprise bike. The big Strom was launched in 2000 as a then still novel crossover form, with a street biased rim configuration of 17/19 inches rear/back, but enough ground clearance for a reasonable offroad detour. Powered by a toned-down 90-degree V-twin from the road-running TL1000, it became a success in spite of quirks such as a tendency to stall in low RPMs and a weird, extremely long overdrive. Those were overshadowed by great comfort for rider and pillion on the freeway, good, bad and dirt roads, coupled with size allowing easy placement of abundant luggage. Suzuki thoroughly overworked the 1000 in 2014, eliminating the rough edges by developing a totally new, 1,037 cc motor and updating the brakes and the looks. Another incarnation, with a modified appearance and rider assists, came in 2018, with evolutive improvements and design tweaks. For 2020 Suzuki unveiled the new V-Strom 1050, again significantly overhauled, not least in appearance. It is based on the same engine as before, but is now packed with electronics and a new look harkening to the 1980s Dr. BIG. The V-Strom 650 "Wee" was a smash-hit from the launch in 2004 to present day. Nearly identical in appearance, it is equally comfortable but lighter, nimbler, cheaper with a significantly better fuel economy. With a shorter gearbox ratio, it was also livelier and arguably more fun to ride. The 650 evolution closely followed that of the big cousin - it remains to be seen, however, whether Suzuki will continue the practice and release a 1050-styled 650. The consensual ruling on the V-Strom bikes: for those who care, they lack charisma in comparison to Honda’s Africa Twin and most of European competition.
