The 2017 update made it a contender

Suzuki’s V-Strom is definitely one of the major players on the adventure bike market. A few years ago, Suzuki made the decision to drop the V-Strom 650 Adventure, which it has since brought back, and focus its energies on the base model 650 and 650XT. The result is palpable with a number of improvements made in the 2017 model year that will likely endear these rides to their fans even more. Now we have more power, plus a traction control system to help manage said power as well as some nifty aesthetic tweaks.

It’s Suzuki’s new flagship globetrotter with more power and enhanced rider amenities

Suzuki produced a next-gen V-Strom 1050 ahead of the 2020 model year with a revised frame, tuned powerplant, and updated electronics, and it builds on that platform to deliver its new flagship globetrotter, the V-Strom 1050XT Adventure. The historical design references are every bit as strong in this model as they are in its somewhat less-noble siblings with plenty of old-school DNA in evidence, but it’s the under-the-hood, ride-quality fandanglery and stock dry-storage capacity that puts it over the top.

Its Heritage Goes Back To The ’88 Paris-Dakar Rally Bike Based On The DR750S

Suzuki builds on its new retro-tastic V-Strom 1050 platform to produce the even more capable V-Strom 1050XT. The 1050 XT has an improved electronics suite along with its enhanced engine performance and classic looks. The addition of an inertial-measurement unit brings a corner-sensitive element to the Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.) to put this ride near the top of the technological totem pole as it were. This is most definitely a de facto long-distance adventure tourbike built with an eye toward comfort and safety.

A New Rally-Style Look, Updated Electronics, And Upgraded Engine Performance Are Part Of The Package For 2020

Suzuki unveiled its new V-Strom 1050 line at the 2019 Milan show with an aggressive new look and expanded capabilities meant to make it easier to range hither and yon over a variety of surfaces. In addition to the new rally-style look, updated electronics and upgraded engine performance are part of the package for MY2020. The V-Strom 1050 serves as the platform for the top-shelf “XT” models but even the stock base model comes packed with upgraded electronics and net-new tech to make it attractive and competitive within the adventure bike market.

The No-Fuss-No-Hassle Adventure Bike With Even More Adventure Features

Suzuki releases its most adventuresome V-Strom model to date with its upgraded-for-2019 V-Strom 1000XT Adventure. Aptly named, the “Adventure” brings its own brand of long-range capability to the table with a five-plus gallon fuel tank and a whole host of ride-quality and safety electronics to help you keep it dirty side down. Stock panniers provide the dry, secure storage American riders expect with their touring bikes, and the factory offers up a robust line of accessories to fill in any perceived gaps. This may well be the V-Strom you’ve been waiting for.

The No-Fuss-No-Hassle Adventure Bike

Suzuki hits MY2019 with its V-Strom 1000 along with the off-road-tastic 1000XT added to the adventure stable last year for the folks who favor the road (or non-road) traveled by few. Power remains the same at the 100-pony mark, but the mill upped its emissions game to meet the current requirements with a new exhaust system. Electronics received a buff as well with a new Bosch Inertial Measurement Unit that refines the ABS system to include lean-sensitive intervention for an extra layer of protection for those times when the available traction is split between steering and braking forces. Overall, the new V-Stroms look to be a little more capable and user friendly than the previous gen with more top-shelf goodies even if the top-end is currently showing a flat growth curve.

Touring, Commuting, Or Just For Fun

Suzuki adds to its V-Strom 650 family with the new-for-2019 V-Strom 650XT Touring. The “Touring” builds on the proven 650 XT platform even as it borrows its looks from elsewhere in the V-Strom lineup. Power comes from a 645 cc V-twin, and the Touring comes with a host of safety features to help you keep it dirty-side down and between the appropriate lines. Comfort was a front-burner topic as well, as evidenced by the vented windshield and handguards that come with the stock equipment package, so this new variant can definitely pull double duty as a light tourbike or a dandy commuter.

The Quintessential Entry-Level Bike

After a race to find the ideal maximum displacement for the adventure-bike genre, Suzuki has now turned its attention toward seeking out the bottom of the effective envelope with the new-in-2017 V-Strom 250. This A2 license-compliant ride is bound for the entry-level market with much the same look as its bigger brothers in spite of its diminutive powerplant and a similar affinity for long-distance trips. The mill is tweaked for the purpose with 25 ponies on tap and a smooth delivery, and of course, the “250” sports plenty of secure storage and storage options for your cargo, so you can actually do some proper touring with it, right off the showroom floor. What else has Suzuki got going on with its mini-adv? Let’s find out.

2015 - 2016 Suzuki V-Strom 1000 ABS / V-Strom 1000 ABS Adventure

Suzuki continues strong in the adventure market for 2016 with the V Strom family. The 1000 and 1000 Adventure share the stable with their 650 cc counterparts for fun on-road and off-road in grand touring style.

If you’re looking at an adventure bike for the first time, understand that this isn’t a sport bike with off-road capabilities. Don’t look at that 1000 cc engine and get a chubby like you would with a crotch rocket. These V Strom 1000s are adventure bikes – tall seat, tall tank and suspension squishier than a street bike, but not as much travel as a proper off-road bike. Is that a bad thing? No, as long as you know what you’re looking at.

Suzuki product planner Tomohisa Ichimaru explained that his group wanted to build a bike with "big bike" power and performance but easy to maneuver and comfortable to ride. They wanted smooth performance at low-to-mid range for touring, while maintaining the free-revving nature at high rpm. Having owned a previous-generation V-Strom 650, Tomohisa went into the project with the experience of a long-distance touring rider. He brought with him ideas on how to improve the next generation from both an engineering standpoint and from a rider’s point of view. For the 2015 model year, Tomohisa and the folks at Suzuki bring you the V-Strom 1000 Sport, available outside the U.S. market.

The phrase “Jack of all trades” usually comes with the unspoken implication that the subject is also a “master of none.” Suzuki makes significant inroads toward combating that assertion with its 2015 V-Strom 1000 ABS SE. Built for the Canadian “sport-adventure” bike market, the factory added features normally seen only in upper-middle to top-of-the-line, single-purpose bikes (ie sport, tour, offroad et cetera) to give this ride options and abilities beyond the norm for a dual-purpose bike. Join me as I look into how this Jack (Jacques?) challenges the second half of that phrase.

2012 Suzuki V-Strom 1000

2012 Suzuki V-Strom 1000

The high and mighty always seem to have a way of reinventing themselves in a way that takes their name to a new level. If there was ever a bike that could lay claim to that, it’s the 2012 Suzuki V-Strom 1000. It’s got one of the most powerful engines on the market and, with that, has made a name for itself for itself as one of the most popular Suzuki bikes on the market today.

A lot of the cruiser’s popularity can be attributed to its 996cc liquid-cooled, Suzuki fuel-injected, 90-degree V-twin engine with four valves per cylinder, dual-overhead cams, and oil. This set-up not only provides exceptional low-end and mid-range torque for exhilarating performance, but also does it in a manner that makes every one of its competitors wince in terror. The V-Strom 1000’s impressive credentials allow riders to tap into an unspeakable power in every gear.

Joining the V-Strom 1000’s mighty powertrain is its impeccable handling capabilities, thanks in large part to a lightweight, compact, and rigid aluminum twin-spar frame and swingarm. Cartridge-style 43mm front forks with adjustable preload provides 6.3" of wheel travel allow for a comfortable ride while a link-type rear suspension featuring 6.3" of wheel travel and a piggyback-style shock absorber with adjustable rebound damping and a knob-operated hydraulic preload adjuster add to its handling capabilities.

As far as accessories are concerned, the V-Strom 1000 gets its fair share, including nylon Givi-style panniers, a top box, aluminum side cases large enough to fit a full-coverage helmet, a rugged accessory engine bar, and an adjustable windscreen.

Find out more about the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 after the jump.
