2019 Acura NSX Pikes Peak Pace Car
The 2019 Acura NSX Pikes Peak Pace Car is a unique version of the Acura NSX that serves as the official pace car for the 97th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Essentially a production model fitted with pace-specific features, the 2019 NSX is the fifth consecutive Acura to pace the "Race to the Clouds." The second-gen NSX first served as the pace car for this event in 2015.
The Japanese pace car will be driven to the Pikes Peak summit by David Donner. A six-time Pikes Peak champion, Donner is also the current holder of the Time Attack 2 Production class record. The pace car will be joined by five other race entries, including two NSX cars. James Robinson will drive one in the Time Attack 1 class, while Nick Robinson will drive the second in the same category. Acura also fields the TLX GT in the Open class, the RDX A-Spec in the Exhibition class, and the MDX Sport Hybrid in the Exhibition class.
2019 Bentley Continental GT Pikes Peak #100
The Bentley Continental GT Pikes Peak #100 is a race car based on the production grand tourer. The Brits developed this vehicle specifically for the 2019 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Bentley aims to break the record for production cars, currently set at 10:26.9 minutes.
The Pikes Peak-spec Continental GT follows in the footsteps of the Bentayga, which set a record for production SUVs at the 2018 race. The Bentayga "climbed" the mountain in 10:49.9 minutes, shaving nearly two minutes of the previous record with an average speed of 66.5 mph. The race-spec Continental GT will be driven by Rhys Millen, a Pikes Peak veteran and a former winner of the "Race to the Clouds."
2017 Norma MXX RD Limited
The Norma M20 was first introduced in 2003 as a Group CN prototype for the Prototype Endurance Challenge, the Speed EuroSeries, and the European Le Mans series. The car was also used in the FIA European Hill Climb Championship, and in 2014 in was raced at Pikes Peak for the very first time. The M20 won its maiden race with Romain Dumas behind the wheel and scored its second win two years later, in 2016, when it also ran the second-best lap. In 2017, Norma and Dumas returned at Pikes Peak with the MXX RD Limited update, scoring their third overall win in the Unlimited class.
Although it didn’t manage to best his record from 2016, Romain Dumas was a tenth-second faster than in 2014, thus posting the third-best overall time in the "Race to the Clouds." While still more than 30 seconds off Sebastien Loeb’s incredible record from 2013, Dumas’ effort is truly impressive given that Norma is a very small company that doesn’t benefit from the same financial support as the Peugeot 208 T16. It remains to be seen whether a new update will make the Norma faster in 2018, but until then, let’s have a closer look at one of the most extreme race cars ever built.

2016 Acura EV Concept
Rumored ever since the first-generation model was discontinued in 2005, the new Acura NSX made its official debut at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show after many delays. But, the wait was definitely worth it. Designed to modern standards with an aggressive exterior and sporty, yet classy interior, the second-gen NSX received a state-of-the-art drivetrain that combines a twin-turbo, 3.5-liter V-6 gasoline engine, three electric motors, and a nine-speed, dual-clutch transmission. Built almost entirely from lightweight materials, the NSX is both a high-profile sports car and a full-fledged track toy for speedy weekends at the track.
In production for only a couple of months as of June 2016, the NSX has already spawned a couple of race cars specifically modified for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. With the 2016 "Race to the Clouds" just around the corner, Acura has announced that it has used the NSX as a basis for an all-electric race car as well. Dubbed EV Concept, it will be campaigned in the Electric Modified Class of the 2016 Pikes Peak. Unlike the other NSX-based racers, the EV Concept uses a different drivetrain and a further evolution of the experimental four-motor Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system.
"We’ve been tuning the car for several weeks at Pikes and have advanced its performance significantly," said Tetsuya Yamano, who will be driving the NSX. "We’re honored to be running at Pikes in this historical, anniversary year – an event respected by racing fans all over the world," added the driver who campaigned last year’s CR-Z-based electric prototypes.

Though it doesn’t have the same racing history at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb as other automakers, Scion is bent on making a mark at this year’s race.
For the occasion, the Japanese automaker has introduced the car that will compete against the heavyweights of the Unlimited Class: an Evasive Motorsports-prepared Scion FR-S that, if for nothing else, looks the part of a giant killer.
Prepared and developed to the unique racing specifications needed to compete at Pikes Peak, the FR-S comes with a bevy of aerodynamic components, highlighted by that enormous rear wing that should come in handy when the FR-S is trying to keep its wheels on the ground.
A large front wing was also installed on the car, as well as what looks like an equally large rear diffuser, both serving the same aerodynamic purpose of eliminating aerodynamic lift to allow the FR-S to maintain its speed as it attempts to give all the other competitors of the Unlimited Class a run for their money.
No power details were given but considering the kind of cars that are competing in this class, we wouldn’t be surprised if this high-powered FR-S has over 650 horsepower under its hood. That is quite a healthy increase over the stock 200 horsepower, but still very much attainable.

In 2010, a Yokohama EV Sports Vehicle HER-02 set a record for the fastest electric vehicle to complete the iconic 12.42-mile-long Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The vehicle obtained an impressive time of 13:17.575 with Ikuo Hanawa behind the wheel. That mark shattered the previous Pikes Peak EV record, set by Jeri Unser in 2003, by 65 seconds.
Last year, the same vehicle finished fifth in its class and for this year Yokohama will make another try.
The HER-02 is powered by an electric motor that delivers a total of 255 horsepower and takes its power from a 37 kWh Sanyo battery pack. All of the motor’s 255 ponies are sent to the rear wheels. The electric vehicle weighs only 2,535 pounds and, thanks to its two spoilers, it delivers a surprising amount of downforce to help it stay glued to the road in twists.

If Mini has no official entry for the 2013 Pikes Peak it does not mean there won’t be any Mini at the famous race. French driver Jean-Philippe Dayraut will enter the race in a Mini "No Limit" Pikes Peak race car.
Last year he completed the race in the Dacia Duster and it looks like this year it decided to give it another try. The car he will use this year it is pretty much identical to the model used last year, but for the 2013 race he opted for a Mini skin.
When compared to the model raced last year, the new Mini "No Limit" received a series of improvements. Dayraut and his team worked on making the car about 176 pounds lights, while the engine delivers a total of 900 horsepower.
The 2013 Pikes Peak is still more than one month away and we are hopping to get full details on this car until then.

Rally legend, Sebastian Loeb, is considered one of the greatest drivers in the world, having taken home nine WRC titles in his illustrious car. For a man that’s no stranger to winning, Loeb is poised to take on his next challenge: taking down Pikes Peak.
And for that, Peugeot announced that it had “borrowed” Loeb from Citroen to drive the company’s new 208-derived T16 Pikes Peak race car.
The car itself is expected to compete in the Unlimited Class of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Performance details have yet to be announced, but expect this racecar to pack in tremendous amounts of power, possibly even reaching 1,000 horsepower.
The race car looks like it’s been given copious amounts of carbon fiber to go with extended side skirts and a side-exiting exhaust. A massive rear wing also part of the design, as is an interior that’s been stripped down to accommodate nothing more than racing equipment.
A carbon-fiber racing seat can clearly be seen inside a roll cage. There’s also a digital instrument cluster, alloy pedals, and an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters.

Mitsubishi is preparing to enter this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb held from June 25 to June 30 with a specially prepared MiEV Evolution II all-electric prototype. Mitsubishi will have two entries in the competition and is hoping for an overall first place. Mitsubishi climbed the Pikes Peak last year for the first time when it managed to finish second in the Electric Division.
The prototype prepared for this year’s climb once again uses parts used in production vehicles combined with a high-capacity battery and high-output motors both specially designed by MMC’s suppliers.
When compared to the model raced last year, the new MiEV Evolution II receives a S-AWC (Super All-Wheel Control) integrated vehicle dynamics control system that helps increase handling and control.
The first MiEV Evolution II will be driven by two-time Dakar Rally overall champion Hiroshi Masuoka and the second one by Greg Tracy, six-time Pikes Peak motorcycle champion.

The 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb was quite a successful one for Toyota, as the company set a new EV record of 10:15.380 up the hill in the Electric class. For this year’s hill climb, the company prepared an improved version of its electric car in an attempt to break its previous run.
The improved version of the P002 is powered by an electric motor that takes its power from a 42 kWh lithium-ion battery. This electric drivetrain delivers a total of 536 horsepower (up from the previous 469 horsepower) and a peak torque of 885 pound-feet. The new P002 can hit a top speed of 142 mph.
The model is being developed on a Radical chassis and features an aerodynamic package to help keep the car glued to the ground at high speeds.
The new TMG EV P002 will be driven by Rod Millen at Pikes Peak on June 30th and one week later it will arrive at Le Mans 24 Hours.

For years, Nobuhiro ’Monster’ Tajima was considered the king of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. All that, however, changed last year when Rhys Millen broke Tajima’s world record up the hill with a time of 9:46.164 in a modified Hyundai Genesis Coupe.
But if you thought that the Japanese legend would take that defeat sitting down, you got another thing coming. And by ’another thing’, we mean the Monster Sport Super 86.
That’s the name of the Toyota GT 86-sourced race Monster Tajima will be bringing to Pikes Peak this year. Yep, say good bye to the Sport E-RUNNER because the man, the myth, and the legend will be driving a brand new bad boy in his quest to reclaim the Pikes Peak record.
Looking at the Super 86, you’d be hard-pressed to think that it’s an actual GT 86. There are styling similarities, particularly the use of the sports car’s front end, but for the most part, the similarities come few and far in between.
Plus, the Super 86 is designed to compete in the Pikes Peak Unlimited Class, which pretty much means that engineers have free reign to build a car that can throw down with the best of ’em.
There are very few specific details about the Super 86, but there are whispers that the racecar is set to be powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine that carries an output of 670 horsepower to go with an all-wheel-drive system.

Earlier this month, Honda was said to enter a total of 10 cars, motorcycles and ATVs in the upcoming 2013 Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Along with setting a world record for the company with the most entries in the ultimate hill climb, Honda is also aiming for an overall victory. Last year, Honda obtained victories only in the 450 Division and the "Quad Modified" class, making the run a nearly complete disappointment for the proud automaker.
One of these 10 entries will be a CR-Z driven by Sage Marie for Honda North America in the Exhibition class. This race version of the CR-Z was developed by Honda Performance Development and will be equipped with a turbocharger and upgraded hybrid drivetrain that delivers a total of 200 horsepower.
The 91st running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is scheduled for June 30, 2013 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Last year, LoveFab made its debut at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with a race car based on the Acura NSX. The team did great at the race and managed to finish one of the toughest motorsport events in the world. For the 2013 Pikes Peak, the team will make a comeback with a lighter and more powerful Acura NSX-based machine.
The new project is known as the "Enviate" and will be driven by LoveFab’s owner and professional driver, Cody Loveland. Even though it is based on the NSX, the new Enviate will only retain the original subframes and suspension. Everything else has been modified, including the twin turbocharged, dry-sumped LS1 engine; ultra-lightweight chromoly tube-chassis; and the full carbon fiber body.
The new LoveFab Enviate will begin testing on May 1st and then will be ready for the 91st running of the Pikes Peak run.

For anyone that got a chance to see the wreck-fest that was also known as the 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), you may have noticed an odd vehicle resting just inside the top-10 standings. This vehicle was a Polaris RZR-X... That’s right, a UTV managed to sneak its way into the top-10 with a finishing time of 10:40.669.
This is not a normal RZR-X that you would see sitting in a local bike shop. Oh, no. It’s owner, Doug Siddens, and his crew have this RZR-X tuned to the gills, making it outrun some of the most exotic cars in the world.
In addition, if you were to sit this RZR next to any other RZR in the world, you would barely be able to tell that they are the same vehicle. Doug’s beast features all of the fixins needed to make it into a true race car, err, race UTV.
Mr. Siddens was so kind to actually take the time out to send us a laundry list of what the vehicle has and we chose to provide our readers with a full review of this amazing Polaris RZR.

This year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is finally just around the corner after being canceled because of the Waldo Canyon wildfire in Colorado Springs. With the race taking place in the next week - August 12th to be exact - Audi is now announcing their presence at the climb with a teaser image of their competition vehicle, the RS5.
All we have for now is this teaser image revealed by Audi on their Facebook page, but details surrounding the racer should be revealed next week when it begins its ascent. Audi previously announced that Walter Rohl would return to Pikes Peak as the driver of the the original Sport Quattro S1 he raced to victory a quarter of a century ago. They even released a video of the car’s preparations, meaning Audi could have two vehicles competing.
More details on this Audi RS5 Pikes Peak will be unveiled next week, so stay tuned!
UPDATE 08/10/2012: After delivering the first teaser image the other day, Audi has now unveiled the first official images of the RS5 which will climb Pikes Peak next week. These images also come with the announcement that Audi will team up with Ducati at Pikes Peak to celebrate their common heritage at this iconic mountain.
With the 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb set to begin next week, we are getting more details on the models that will fight the hill this year. Hyundai’s model for the race will be a Genesis Coupe specially customized for Pikes Peak.
Last year’s RMR PM580 failed to climb the hill, so this year’s model is getting a little help from a new braking sponsor in Pulse to make it worthy of the ascent. As for power, Hyundai hasn’t revealed any details about the Genesis’ powertrain, leaving the standard 350 HP V6 engine as the likely power source.
The Hyundai Genesis Coupe Pikes Peak will be driven by Rhys Millen who will be piloting the car in the Time Attack class, racing against 2011 champion Brianne Corn, Toshiki Yoshioka, and Denver teenager Savannah Rickli.

When the 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb was postponed last month because of the Colorado wildfires, it was met with understanding from a lot of people given the circumstances, but also with hints of disappointment from fans of the event.
But all’s about to be forgiven when the 90th installment of the event kicks off on August 12. One vehicle that comes as a late entry into the party is this insane Acura NSX from the guys over at LoveFab in Traverse, Michigan. We say that word "insane" because the car features a ridiculous engine under its hood in the make of a twin-turbo C96S engine that produces a whopping 850 horsepower.
Needless to say, those numbers are tantamount to what you’d expect from cars that will be participating at Pikes Peak. Will the LoveFab NSX have what it takes to steal the show?
That remains to be seen, but it sure wouldn’t hurt that it has 850 horsepower to lean on to.

One of the most exciting races in the auto calendar is the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. You see some of the most unique race cars and you get treated to the kind of timed laps no other auto event in the calendar will give you.
This year, we’ve already seen some of the race cars that will be competing in the event, and now Toyota is jumping into the fold with their Pikes Peak offering, the Toyota Motorsports EV P002 prototype race car.
The EV P002 is based on the Radical sports car chassis and has been fitted with a 42-kWh lithium ceramic battery pack that’s charged by an off-board DC system, netting an output of 470 horsepower and 664 lb/ft of torque with a top speed of 149 mph. Pretty intense for an electric race car, right?
The competition at Pikes Peak is pretty intense, that much we know. But these boys clearly are no pushovers, having already made a name for themselves by with the EV P002’s predecessor, the EV P001, which incidentally set the fastest EV lap at the Nurburgring last year.
If the EV P001 was capable of that, it’s pretty exciting to think what it’s successor can do at Pikes Peak.
With the 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb drawing closer and closer, we’re now getting a pretty good look at some of the cars that will be competing in the annual event in Colorado.
One car, in particular, that caught our attention is this 1995 BMW M3 Coupe. On any other day, cars like this probably go unnoticed, but this one is pretty cool because it’s set to compete at Pikes Peak.
Tuned to race by EV West, this M3 Coupe has been stripped down of pretty much everything that it won’t need on a racing set-up. What it does have now are a number of racing components, including a bucket racing seat, a full-body roll cage, a huge rear wing fitted on the trunk, plenty of carbon fiber panels, and a new set of 17" lightweight wheels.
To ensure that the their M3 Coupe can compete with some of the quirkiest and more powerful Pikes Peak-bound cars competing in the annual hill climb, EV West took out the car’s standard 3.0-liter inline-six engine and replaced it with a twin-air cooled electric motor that produces a staggering 400 horsepower and an even more staggering 700 lb/ft of torque.
A little over a month ago, a design sketch of Monster Tajima’s new Pikes Peak race car was revealed to the public, and to our surprise, it wasn’t a new iteration of his Suzuki SX4 Hill Climb Special.
The new car, which we now know as the Monster Sport E-Runner Pikes Peak Special, looks like an actual LMP1 prototype with plenty of GoPro cameras installed on it. The blue LED stripe headlights even add a mix of Batmobile and K.I.T.T from Knight Rider to it.
Having said all of that, the Monster Sport E-Runner Pikes Peak Special means serious business as Tajima is looking to set not only the electric car record, but also best his own record time in the Unlimited class. Tajima, a six-time defending champ in Pikes Peak, will most certainly be one of the top contenders this year, even if he’s going to pilot a new toy that a lot of people know little about.
From what we do know about the car, it looks like it’s been given the full-on carbon fiber treatment, complete with a pod-like driver capsule that’s encased by a full-on roll cage. Those aforementioned LED lights are also an attractive sight as are the matching set of blue rims. Meanwhile, the plethora of vents and scoops on the car’s body clearly suggests that the racer is ready to throw down at Pikes Peak next month.
Different car, same results, right?
With Monster Tajima behind the wheel, we’re not about to doubt that.
Electric vehicles running up Pikes Peak isn’t entirely a novelty anymore, especially after we saw a Nissan Leaf and a custom EV from AC Propulsion do it just last year.
This year, Japanese automaker is jumping on the bandwagon by building a custom i-MiEV Prototype that they hope to unleash on Pikes Peak. Called the i-MiEV Evolution, the Pikes Peak-bound race car doesn’t look anything like the i-MiEV. For one, this prototype actually looks like a certified racer, as opposed to the flat-iron-looking i-MiEV.
Despite its completely different look, the i-MiEV Evolution features the same electric motor, drive battery, and a lot of other major components of the production i-MiEV. The i-MiEV Evolution will be using three electric motors - one for the front two wheels, and two for each rear wheel - producing a total output of 322 horsepower. Combine that number to the car’s lightweight structure and you have a race car that’s fixing to make some serious noise at Pikes Peak.

It’s pretty interesting to see how Mitsubishi will continue to evolve their i-MiEV Pikes Peak Race Car leading up to this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. We’re not expecting the car to set any records, but it will be cool to see how it fares relative to the times set by the Nissan Leaf last year.
When Renault said that it was going to take a stab at running Pikes Peak in 2011 AND use a Dacia Duster to run the competition, a lot of people, shall we say, scoffed at that idea.
As it turns out, Renault was actually serious about the whole thing because the first photos of the Dacia Duster Pikes Peak have gone live. It seems a little ambitious for Renault to try to compete in one of the most famous - or infamous - hill climbing competitions in the world, especially considering when they’re using their low-cost, Romanian-based brand for the whole competition.
But this isn’t your ordinary Dacia Duster. While details are still limited, there are whispers going around that this particular Duster will carry a Nissan GT-R-sourced V8 engine that produces a staggering 850 horsepower. Last we checked, that’s a load of power, especially for a car that’s been stripped down to weigh just a little less than 900 kg (1,984 lbs).
The car is set to compete on June 26, 2011 at Pikes Peak, Colorado and will be piloted by Jean-Philippe Dayraut. We don’t know how competitive it’s going to be against the Imprezas of the competition, but there’s plenty of power under this Duster’s hood. And if you’ve got that covered, you stand a very good chance of being competitive.
