It’s been less than two weeks since Mercedes-Benz unveiled the new 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe, and Stuttgart has already announced that a new DTM car based on the new two-door is underway. The race car will be ready just in time for the 2016 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season as a competitor for the updated 2014 BMW M4 DTM and 2014 Audi RS5 DTM.
The new Mercedes-AMG C63 DTM is set to replace the current 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Coupe DTM, which the Germans have been using since 2012, when regulations changed to allow coupes instead of sedans.
"The new Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe will again set new standards for driving dynamics and design. So, the vehicle provides the ideal basis for our DTM car,” said head of Mercedes-AMG DTM, Ulrich Fritz. "I’m already looking forward to seeing the new Mercedes-AMG C63 DTM compete in 2016. Our aim with this vehicle is, of course, to continue the Mercedes-Benz success story in the DTM."
The first tests with the new vehicle will take place this upcoming winter, which means we could see it in action by the end of 2015. The 2016 DTM season commences in May. For now, Mercedes-Benz has only released a handful of photos of the car. Find out more below.

AMG-prepped Mercedes-Benz cars have a long and storied history as pace cars. From the SLS AMG to the C63 AMG, among others, Affalterbach’s beefed-up cars have acted as pace-setters in extremely popular series the world over, such as Formula One and DTM. The SLS AMG alone paced Formula One for five consecutive seasons between 2010 and 2014. Quite an achievement!
With the flagship SLS AMG already discontinued, it’s the Mercedes-AMG GT’s turn to keep things under control when yellow flags are out. Having already been confirmed as the official Safety Car for the 2015 F1 season, the AMG GT will also step in to replace DTM’s previous pace car, the C63 AMG Black Series, at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz on May 29th to 31st, during the second round of this year’s series.
The DTM Safety Car is virtually identical to the Formula One pace car, meaning the 490-horsepower Mercs, Bimmers, and Audis competing in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters will be led during yellow flags by a range-topping, 503-horsepower GT S model.
As usual, the safety car has a light bar on the roof, in this case mounted on an aerodynamically optimized carbon-fiber air scoop. Added features include a front spoiler and a fixed rear wing, both of which are borrowed from the Edition 1 model. A special license plate with "Safety Car" lettering and orange/green LEDs, and radio equipment inside the cockpit complete the package.

Audi unveiled its DTM race car for the 2013 racing season — the new RS 5 DTM — at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. There will be eight different RS 5 DTMs entering the 2013 DTM and the driver lineup will include Jamie Green (Great Britain) and two-time DTM Champion Mattias Ekström (Sweden).
The new DTM racecar was developed in accordance with the regulations announced by DTM officials for the 2013 racing season. Still, the DTM version offers pretty much the same performance data as the current RS5: a 4.2 liter V8 engine delivering a total of 450 horsepower at 8,250 rpm and a peak torque of 317.15 pound-feet available between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm.
Unlike the production version, however, the DTM version will feature a pretty aggressive aerodynamic kit, updated front and rear suspension with double wishbones, and a hydraulic dual-circuit brake system.
The new Audi RS5 DTM will make its racing debut between April 26th and 29th at Barcelona, Spain and from April 9th to 12th at Hockenheim.
With DTM racing returning to Russia for the first time in 30 years, German automaker and perennial contender, Audi, recently brought their racing maven all the way to the Red Square.
The unveiling of the Audi A5 DTM at the Russian capital comes six months before the inaugural race for the most internationally-recognized Touring Car series kicks off at the Moscow Speedway. Guess the Four Rings is trying to get a head on scoring some Russian fans before the Moscow stage of the DTM calendar descends on the Russian capital this coming August.
Two-time champion, Mattias Ekstrom, and 2012 double race winner, Edoardo Mortara, were on hand to present the A5 DTM itself. Built with a CFRP monocoque with an integrated fuel tank and plenty of crash elements, the 2013 A5 DTM was built and designed to bring out the ultimate DTM race car.
And with a 4.0-liter V8 engine that produces 460 horsepower and mates to a six-speed sequential gearbox, the A5 DTM is far from a slouch, matched only by superior handling credentials in the form of an independent front and rear suspension with double wishbones, a pushrod system with spring/damper unit, and adjustable gas pressure dampers.
To handle that kind of power with the rigors of racing, Audi fitted the A5 DTM with a set of 18-inch forged-aluminum wheels wrapped in Hankook tires and backed by a hydraulic dual circuit brake system with light-alloy monobloc brake calipers, and ventilated front and rear carbon-fiber brake discs.
Suffice to say, the new A5 DTM is ready for some DTM action in the Motherland.

With the 2012 DTM season ripping its inaugural race, the time was ripe for the series to introduce the vehicle that would serve as its official safety car. This year, the German Touring Car Masters Championship has tapped the 2013 Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series to serve that role.
Following in the reins of the the C63 AMG, the BMW M3, and a host of several Audis, the C63 AMG Black Series has been fitted with a number of modifications in order to serve its role as the DTM’s official safety car.
Among them include an aerodynamically optimized light bar on the roof and energy-efficient, fast-response LEDs in green and orange. The car also has a modified AMG sports exhaust system and a special rear silencer that allows the car’s 6.3-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine to produce 517 horsepower and 457 lb/ft of torque. This makes it capable of hitting 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds with an electronically-limited top speed of 186mph.
For the exterior, the car carries a slew of packages, including an AMG Aerodynamics Package that carries a genuine carbon fiber front splitter on the front apron and a fixed carbon-fiber rear aerofoil with an adjustable blade. It also has the AMG Track package that includes rear axle gear cooling and a set of 19" forged AMG wheels wrapped in Dunlop Sport Maxx Race tires. Lastly, there’s the AMG Exterior Carbon Fiber package that includes exterior mirror housings, inserts in the side sill panels, and a diffuser insert, all made from carbon fiber.
For the interior, the C63 AMG Black Series Safety Car was given a pair of AMG Sport bucket seats, each coming with four-point seat belts, and an AMG Performance steering wheel wrapped in Nappa leather and Dinamica.
The 2012 racing season has already begun and we’re now seeing participants of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters - that’s DTM, in case you didn’t know - show off their vehicles in the past couple of weeks.
BMW Motorsports has been a regular supplier of race cars in DTM for the past couple of years. This season, the German automaker’s racing division is back in DTM with six BMW M3 DTM race cars, including the recently unveiled Castrol EDGE BMW M3 DTM.
The racer will carry the design livery of Castrol EDGE, considered as Castrol’s strongest and most advanced range of engine oil, and Aral Ultimate, Germany’s largest network of gas stations.
As far as powertrain is concerned, the race car will be powered by a V8 engine that was fitted with its own air restrictor to adhere to racing regulations. With the air restrictor in place, the M3 DTM is capable of producing 480 horsepower, while hitting 0-60 mph in just three seconds, and carrying a top speed of 186 mph.
Safety cars are an integral piece of motor racing, so much so that a lot of racing series have gone the route of building specific safety cars exclusively for their use. The Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) - that’s the German Touring Car Masters - has unveiled their official safety car for the 2012 race season and to no one’s surprise, they picked a local vehicle in the BMW M3.
The M3 DTM Safety Car is actually based on the M3 GTS and just like any other safety car used for racing purposes, this one was specially modified by BMW M GmbH with plenty of enhancements, including unique bodywork painted in Aline White with a special safety car livery, a modified CFRP engine bonnet with vents, a slew of BMW M Performance Accessories on the gurney and flaps, a new orange roof light unit, and a new set of 19" competition wheels wrapped in 255/35 and 285/30 tires with a fixed-caliper system and Stahlflex brake hoses. Meanwhile, the interior of the M3 DTM Safety Car gets new Recaro seats, three and six-point harnesses, and a new steering wheel straight out of the BMW M Performance Accessories catalog.
Under the hood, the M3 DTM Safety Car is powered by a 4.4-liter V8 engine that produces 450 horsepower at 8,300 rpm and is mated to a 7-speed M dual-clutch transmission with Drivelogic capabilities. These figures allow the car to hit 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds with an impressive top speed of 189 mph.
Back in July 2011, BMW pulled the covers off of the BMW M3 DTM Concept Car, a vehicle that was to be the basis of the actual racer that will compete in the 2012 DTM season. Just a few short months later, the German automaker has officially revealed the actual M3 DTM in all its M Performance regalia.
During the official unveiling, BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquadt talked about the process that went into building the race car. "The car’s aerodynamics were developed in close collaboration with the engineers from series production," he said. The BMW Group boasts impressive resources in this field and the wind tunnels are ultra-modern. This – and the Title Partner BMW M Performance Accessories – shows that the entire company is behind the 2012 DTM project and is working hard towards it."
As far as appearances go, the M3 DTM Race Car was inspired by the original M3 cars that raced in the ’old DTM,’ particularly the white finish with red and blue decals running all around the car. "The design is both traditional and modern in equal measures," Marquadt pointed out. "It shows our roots, but in a contemporary style."
The BMW M3 DTM is expected to carry a powerful V8 engine that has been equipped with an air restrictor to deliver 480 horsepower, hit 0-60 mph in just three seconds, and carry a top speed of 186 mph.
Despite already being unveiled, the M3 DTM Race Car will only begin its first full DTM season next year under the banner of three racing teams: BMW Team RBM, BMW Team RMG, and BMW Team Schnitzer.
UPDATE 04/28/12: The last time BMW participated in the German DTM series was 1987. In the 25 years since then, the German automaker was noticeably absent, which makes their return for the 2012 season that much of a big deal. Heck, BMW even decided to make a promo video out of it, which you can see by clicking on the photo above.
The year 2012 will mark BMW’s return to the DTM series after two decades and the M3 DTM concept unveiled at the DTM event in the Olympic Stadium is the car that will put them back on the grid. Based on a BMW M3, the DTM concept is powered by a powerful V8 engine equipped with an air restrictor that delivers about 480 HP. The car accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in about three seconds and can hit a top speed of 186 mph.
BMW will compete in next year’s DTM with three different teams: BMW Team Schnitzer, BMW Team RBM, and BMW Team RMG. More details about them will be released at a later date.
"It is good to see how our DTM project is picking up speed," said Dr. Klaus Draeger, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for development. "Next year, BMW returns to the DTM after two decades. We will be facing our main competitors in the premium sector – and are already looking forward to this challenge. The DTM comeback sees BMW return to its roots. We have enjoyed great success in production car racing in the past, and I am convinced we will follow on in 2012 where we left off. Everyone at BMW Motorsport is working hard to ensure we get off to a successful start next season."
For the 2012 DTM racing series, Audi will be replacing the current A4 DTM with a brand new A5. The car is known as the R17 and comes with a high-strength carbon-fiber monocoque that is combined with a steel tube cage. For the sidewalls, Audi has used a hybrid design with a carbon, Zylon and Rohacell construction. This construction will provide maximum security in case of side impact.
The A5 DTM is powered by a V8 engine that delivers a total of 460 HP - the same engine found in the A4 DTM it replaces. The engine will be mated to a six-speed transmission. Characteristic features of the 2012-generation of DTM vehicles are a larger rear wing and a reduction of the permitted aerodynamics components.
The Audi A5 DTM will make its world debut in September at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. The first prototype of the R17 is currently being built up at Audi Sport in Ingolstadt.
While taking a trip as a medical car for the 2011 Formula One season in Estate form, the Mercedes C63 AMG is welcoming a new job as the Safety Car for the 2011 DTM season. The snazzy Mercedes will make its first appearance on May 1, 2011 at the opening race of the German Touring Car Masters season at the Hockenheimring in Baden-Württemberg with racing driver, Jürgen Kastenholz, behind the wheel.
The C63 AMG Safety Car comes equipped with the AMG Performance Package that will ensure the 6.3-liter V8 engine delivers a total of 687 HP. The engine will be mated to an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission, which incorporates a wet start-up clutch and four transmission modes as well as double-declutching and RACE START functions for optimum driving dynamics.
The Safety Car will also feature enlarged openings and side air outlets, an AMG carbon-fiber spoiler lip on the boot lid that reduces lift at high track speeds, and multi-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels painted in matte black with a high-sheen rim flange. The Mercedes will be further distinguished by DTM Safety Car logos, an LED light bar on the roof, and the stroboscopic flashing LED lights at the front and rear, plus a number plate illuminated with LEDs and the words "Safety Car" on the boot lid.
Last year, BMW made the announcement that it would drop Formula 1, but that’s not the only series the company is ditching. The company has also announced that starting next season the World Touring Car Championship will also be dropped. Instead the company will focus on their return to the DTM series in 2012.
However, BMW will continue to offer BMW 320 TC models to private teams and drivers, but they will be fitted with the new 1.6-liter four-cylinder (DI-) turbo engine. The "TC" in its terminology stands for "Touring Car". With this designation, the 320 TC will represent BMW in the WTCC in 2011 and its 1.6-liter unit will represent MINI in the FIA World Rally Championship program which starts in 2011.
Altogether BMW has delivered over 60 BMW 320si WTCC racing kits to customer teams across the world. These BMW 320 TC models will make their debut at the DTM event in Munich’s Olympic Stadium on July 16th-17th, 2011.
After giving us an inkling of a DTM comeback in April of this year, BMW have finally made it official in Munich today.
It’s been a lengthy 16 years since BMW have entered a challenger for the DTM (German Touring Car Championship) crown and no doubt fans all over the world have been eagerly awaiting their return. Currently the championship is only contested by Mercedes with their C Class AMG DTM and Audi with the A4 DTM. Both employ an aspirated 4l V8 and use the same sequential 6 speed gearbox as stipulated by the rules. The cars’ are fitted with restrictors to peg the torque they produce at 500Nm to even the playing field. It gets interesting as there is no restriction on horsepower (only torque) and engine design plays a huge roll at gaining a competitive edge.
Traditionally, BMW have entered the M3 and we should see more of the same come 2012. The series has been dominated by Audi as of late, with them winning the Championship for the last three years running. We’re sure the boys from Munich will have something to say about that in the 2012 season.
Starting 2012, BMW will join Audi and Mercedes in the German Touring Car Masters (DTM). BMW dropped from the competition 18 seasons ago and, after also dropping the Formula 1, the company announced the motorsport will continue to play a leading role at BMW.
“Following the withdrawal from Formula One, the realignment of our motorsport programme is raising our presence in production car racing to a whole new level....For that reason, we see it as a consistent step to return to our roots after bidding farewell to Formula One, and to expand our commitment to this discipline,” said Dr. Klaus Draeger, the BMW AG board member responsible for development.
Of course, nothing can happen until certain prerequisites are met and ITR, the governing body, is currently working on these prerequisites. In anticipation of a positive outcome, BMW Motorsport is making appropriate preparations on the technical side. The final decision is expected during the year.
