Porsche Mobil1 Supercup preview
A very special star guest joins the action for the seventh round of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup on the Nürburgring.
Five-time Le Mans winner Frank Biela (Germany) accepted an invitation from Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, to drive the 911 GT3 Cup with the starting number 88. After initial tests, the 42-year-old praised the handling of the 400 hp near-standard racing sports car.
Frank Biela’s motorsport career began at the age of 18 when he claimed fourth in the German kart championship. In 1984 he swapped to Formula Ford. Three years later Biela contested his first season of the German Touring Car Championship, which he won in 1991. In 1999 Biela claimed third at his debut Le Mans 24 hour race with Audi. In the three successive years he secured victory at the French classic together with his team mates Emanuele Pirro and Tom Kristensen. In 2006 and 2007 Frank Biela again joined the list of winners at the legendary long distance race.
Now, for the first time, he takes the wheel of a Porsche racing sports car. At his début, Frank Biela faces strong competition and a close field. After six rounds the situation in the drivers’ championship is still wide open. Reigning champion and last year’s winner on the Nürburgring Richard Westbrook (Great Britain, 89 points) comes to the Eifel holding a narrow five point advantage. So far this season the 32-year-old Briton has turned the fastest race lap four times.
Porsche stalwart, Uwe Alzen (Germany, 84 points) ranks second in the overall standings. The 39-year-old claimed championship honours in the Supercup back in 1994 and is the only pilot so far to secure two victories this season. Occupying third in the series is reigning champion of the British Carrera Cup, Damien Faulkner (Ireland, 79 points). Faulkner won the season-opening round in Bahrain. In fourth position sits the four-time Supercup champion and record winner Patrick Huisman (Netherlands, 74 points).
