Volkswagen,the German automaker announced that it will return to Formula 3 championship as a engine supplier.

Between 1979 and 1991 Volkswagen enjoyed a lot of success, winning 7 titles, with drivers like Michael Schumacher and Tom Kristensen. Its first engine will make the race debut at Nurburgring race track in September.

Kris Nissen, Volkswagen’s motorsport director said that the German automaker wants to demonstrate that the engine already performed at high level during its early stags of development, and that in the future it will be considered a potential race winning engine.The race at Nurburgring will be the first opportunity to see how is the engine in comparison with the competition.

Mercedes-Benz currently supplies power plants to all the teams in the F3 championship excepting one, AM Holzer Rennsport, who are currently using an Opel engine. AM Holzer Rennsport is favourite to use Volkswagen’s new engine.

Is this the start of a push towards an F1 entry? Wouldn’t it be great to have a silver car with the Audi logo plastered on the intake funnel, and it bearing the name Auto-Union? Speaking of which...when is VW going to enter a serious team in FIA WRC?
