For ages now Lamborghini and Ferrari have been the biggest rivals, but when it comes to building luxurious SUVs, Lamborghini won the competition. The Urus arrived years before the Purosangue, and before Ferrari even announced its SUV, Lamborghini has already produced more than 20,000 examples, making the Lamborghini Urus the company’s best sold vehicle. In fact, while the Ferrari Purosangue is not even in production yet, it’s not that hard to find a Lamborghini Urus’ for sale on the used market. Still, there is a lot more than just being the first on the market that makes the Urus one of the hottest SUVs on the market today.

The Lamborghini Urus was first announced as a concept back in 2012 and the company needed more than five years to finally put it into production. The SUV arrived at the end of 2017 and went into production for the 2018 model year as the first Super Sport Utility Vehicle in the world. It created a new niche in the luxury segment by combining the soul of a super sports car and the functionality of an SUV. While it combines the breathtaking design and the heart-pounding performance figures of any other Lamborghini supercar, the Urus also offers the practicality of an SUV with a cargo space of up to 590 liters (20.8 cubic feet). The Purosangue on the other hand promises only 16.7 cubic feet of cargo space.

9 The Urus Is More Powerful Than Most SUVs

The Lamborghini Urus is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine - a modified version of Audi's 4.0-liter V-8 that is also found in some S and RS models, but also in the Porsche Cayenne and Panamera. In the base model, it delivers a total of 641 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque, while in both the S and the Performante trims the output is increased by 16 horsepower up to 657. While it delivers about 80 horsepower less than Maranello's SUV, the Urus is a lot more powerful than most of the other luxury SUVs on the market. For example, the Aston Martin DBX only makes 542 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, the Cullinan 563 horses and 627 pound-feet of torque , and the Bentayga Speed 626 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque.

Despite its curb weight of 4,850 pounds, the Urus delivers supercar-like performance on the road. The sprint from 0 to 60 mph is made in 3.6 seconds in the base trim, but goes down to 3.3 seconds for the Performante, while top speed for both models is 190 mph. Many tests revealed the Lamborghini Urus runs the quarter mile in 11.3 seconds at 121 mph. The SUV is also already breaking records, with the Performante running to the top of Pikes Peak (14,115 feet) in 10 minutes and 32 seconds. At the same time, the Urus lapped Nurburgring in 7 minutes and 47 seconds, being the 3rd fastest SUV around the track, after the Audi RS Q8 and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT.

The Urus comes with carbon ceramic brakes (CCB) as standard. They measure 440 x 40 mm - 17.3 x 1.57 inches, (diameter x thickness) in the front and 370 x 30 mm - 14.56 x 1.18 inches in the rear - making them the largest and most effective ever available on a production car. They provide performance and safety in all conditions and environments and help the Urus to decelerate from 100 km/h (62 mph) to 0 in 33.7 m. The SUV also features an advanced wheelhouse aerodynamic solution with NACA cooling that improves and augments front brake cooling to enhance driving dynamics.

Being a luxurious vehicle, the Lamborghini Urus is built with city driving in mind. However, the company is also offering an optional Off-Road package that adds Terra and Sabbia driving modes. The package adds specific metal-reinforced bumpers and additional underfloor protection required for driving on not-so-friendly roads. The engine itself has been specially optimized to provide a high level of torque at low revs - something needed during off-road conditions. There is also a Torsen central self-locking differential that offers maximum control and agility especially during off-road conditions. It splits the torque 40/60 to the independent front/rear axle as standard, but 70-percent to the front or 87-percent to the rear is also possible. This off-road feature brings it a little bit closer to its ancestor, the LM002.

5 The Urus' Unique Design Sets It Apart

The Urus brings a design that you have never seen before, yet you will very easily recognize it as a Lamborghini. The SUV is a combination of sporty, elegant, and off-road with muscular lines and massive wheels and tires. Up front, it features the traditional Y-shaped and hexagonal Lamborghini details, and an aggressive hood identical to the one from the Aventador. When viewed from the side you will notice a low, angular roofline, but you also must know the Urus sits the lowest in its segment. The rear has another distinctive Lamborghini feature - the crossed lines on the rear hood, a large diffuser, and quad exhaust pipes. The taillights are similar to the ones found on the Huracan.
