Is th Acura TLX Type-S Foreshadowing a New Generation of Acura Performance Cars?
The performance version of the Acura TLX is finally on sale
And it's going to be produced in 2,000 copies
It will have a 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 developed by the NSX team
With 355 horsepower. 354 pound-feet, and 4.5 seconds to 60 mph
The V-6 is aided by a beefed up 10-speed automatic and the Super Handling All-wheel-drive
The Type-S also has a strengthened chassis in order to cope with the turbo-V-6 power
The Type S has adaptive suspension with double wishbones at the front, and four-piston Brembo calipers
The base version comes with 20-inch wheels wrapped in Pireli Centodato P7 rubber
While the "Wheel and Tire" package brings lightweight wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero summer tires
The Type-S scores a bigger grille, larger side vents, and a front lip spoiler
The sportier rear features a decklid spoiler, and a new diffuser with quad exhausts
The already great interior now has a flat-bottom steering wheel, sportier seats, and lots of Type-S logos
The high-quality hand-stitched leather gives an even more luxurious feel
Despite the award-winning infotainment system you still get quick-access buttons for many of the car's functions
The 10.2-inch infotainment screen is very intuitive
And the digital gauge cluster provides comprehensive information
The Type S still has more than enough space four four adults - 42.4 inches front legroom and 34.9 inches rear
It has 13.5 cubic feet cargo capacity and more if you remove the chassis bracing
The TLX Type S is competitively priced at $52,300
Toyota Camry TRD is the budget alternative at $31,040
It has 302 horsepower, 267 pound-feet, and 5.5 secodns to 60 mph, but only front-wheel-drive
The BMW M340i on the other hand
Is quicker, more powerful, but costs slightly more at $54,700
Although not without competition, the Type-S treatment has turned the TLX into a proper performance sedan
This begs the question: was all that research and development just for 2,000 cars?
Or are they simply sampling the market?
There is a possibility that the Type-S production may go beyond the intended 2,000 cars
