When BMW launched the 4 Series Gran Coupe back in 2021, it made it very clear that an M performance version will never happen. But that's okay, because Alpina just launched something a little bit better than the M4 Gran Coupe. Spied testing quite a few times before, the new B4 Gran Coupe will be put on sale in June of 2022.

What powers the Alpina B4 Gran Coupe?

The new B4 Gan Coupe is powered by a 3.0-liter straight-six cylinder engine fitted with Alpina-specific flow-optimized turbine housings. These will convert exhaust gas energy into boost pressure at low engine speeds. The engine also comes equipped with a large intercooler, plus an optimized air intake duct with large-volume air filter housings.

In the B4, the engine delivers a total of 495 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque - numbers that place it right in between the standard M3/M4 and the M3/M4 Competition.

When it comes to the performance figures, the B4 is superior to both the M3/M4 and the M3/M4 Competition. It goes from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.7 seconds and up to a top speed of 187 mph. By comparison, the M4 goes from 0 to 62 mph in 4.1 seconds, while the Competition version does the same sprint in 3.8 seconds. The top speed is 180 mph for both models when you opt for the M Driver’s Package.

The engine sends its power via an eight-speed automatic and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system to all four wheels. Also, a special exhaust system with four end pipes completely transform the sound of the straight-six engine.

The model will also be offered with an electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential that ensures optimal traction and agility. Alpina’s Sport Suspension is also part of the package. It features a negative camber of 1.25-inch at the front axle, specially developed front-axle anti-roll bars, a bespoke spring, and damper configuration.

How about the exterior and the interior?

When it comes to the exterior look, the new B4 is "characterized by an expressive, elegant design with an elongated silhouette and flowing roofline." In general, it looks pretty much identical to the M3/M4, but it gets a different front spoiler and a rear spoiler, the grille features chrome surrounds, and there are, of course, the traditional Alpina logos.

The most distinctive feature of the exterior look is the new set of wheels. Sized at 20-inch, the new wheels are a modern interpretation of the traditional Alpina Classic design. The wheels feature a long and thin spoke design, and it was built in a complex forging process that keeps the weight down to just 12 kilos (26.5 pounds). The wheels are wrapped in Pirelli P ZERO ultra-high performance tires that offer high levels of grip and lateral support.

As for the interior, the B4 is a little bit more luxury-focused than the M3/M4. Both the seats and the steering wheel are hand-stitched in luxurious Lavalina leather, while a special plaque placed on the console just behind the iDrive controller will display the car’s build number.

The B4 has a minimum cargo capacity of 470 liters (16.5 cubic feet) and a maximum capacity of 1,290 liters (45.5 cubic feet). Just for the sake of comparison, with all seats in place, the M3 has a cargo room of 13 cubic feet.

How much does the Alpina B4 Gran Coupe Cost?

In Germany, the new B4 Gran Coupe will be priced from €91,800 (about $102,500 at the current exchange rates). By comparison, in Germany, the standard BMW M4 is priced at €65,338 and the M4 Competition at €67,977.

The new Alpina B4 will go on sale in Europe in July 2022, with sales in the States to follow later in the year.
