Usually when you see a BMW and a Mercedes one next to the other is for some sort of competition. But, German tuner G-Power decided to stop the rivalry and get both the BMW X5 M Competition and Mercedes-AMG G 63 into the shop for some serious upgrades.

What changes were made under the hood?

From the factory, the BMW X5 M Competition is offered with a 4.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8 engine that delivers a total of 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. The Mercedes-AMG G63 on the other hand has a 4.0-liter, biturbo V-8 engine that delivers 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque.

Impressive numbers for some SUVs, but there is room for improvement for both of them. And apparently, a lot can be improved, as for both SUVs the German tuner is offering three different levels of power upgrade.

Stage one includes G-Power’s GP-700 performance software. With this upgrade both models will now deliver 700 horsepower, while torque in the GX5M Bi-Turbo (aka the X5 M Competition) goes up to 626 pound-feet and in the GP 63 Bi-Turbo (aka the AMG G63) it goes up to 700 pound-feet.

In the next stage, the GP-700 performance upgrade is combined with a new sports exhaust system with flap technology.

The final stage also includes an upgraded turbocharger that enables the delivery of higher boost pressures and significantly increased air masses. As a result, power is now increased to 800 horsepower, while torque is 700 pound-feet in the X5 M and 774 pound-feet in the G63.

Are there any other upgrades?

No, G-Power left the exterior and the interior for both SUVs untouched. The only upgrade is a new set of 23-inch ultra-light and high-strength forged wheels offered for both models.
