The BMW 5 Series has long been one of the brand’s most significant models. With nearly 50 years of history and millions sold, the 5er has enjoyed great success. The current G30 generation was recently updated, so it’s not going away in the next couple of years. That said, we’ve already seen spy footage of the next generation BWM 5 Series, set to debut around 2024. This is what we know so far.

Update 7-12-2022: The BMW 5 Series was caught testing on public roads again, this time with updated exterior lights and a lot less padding under the camo

Three Different Models

The next-generation BMW 5 Series has an internal chassis code G60. Just like the next 7 Series, it will be offered in three different versions. There will be a 5 Series EV, which is expected to wear the i5 moniker. Besides that, there will still be a PHEV version and the conventional lineup of combustion engine variants. The i5 will, of course, score a distinctive front end, but otherwise, the different versions will look more or less identical.

The BMW 5 Series PHEV and the BMW i5

The spy shots we got were of not one, but two versions of the next BMW 5 Series. We have the i5, and the 5 Series PHEV, each with its distinctive stickers. The plug-in hybrid’s charging port is clearly visible on the front left fender.

The second version of the i5 is expected to have a 100 kWh battery and a 500 horsepower output from a dual electric motor setup. This would allow the i5 to better compete with the likes of Tesla Model S and the upcoming Mercedes EQE.

The next 5 Series will definitely score a more traditional three-box sedan look compared to some of its competitors like the also anticipated Mercedes EQE. On some of the images, we see the 5 Series parked next to the 7 Series, also wrapped in camouflage. From what we can make out, the rear ends of the two cars share many design cues.

In the front, we see a rather pronounced shark nose, which is even more noticeable next to the 3 Series. It’s a nice throwback to BMW cars of old. Could the next 5 Series be more retro-inspired?

A 5 Series Touring Is Very Possible - At Least In Europe

Despite the four-door coupes becoming a thing in recent years, it seems station wagons are still a thing. With this in mind, BMW is also expected to launch a BMW 5 Series Touring sometime after the sedan launches, although it is unknown at this point whether the all-electric i5 will be offered in wagon form. What we probably won’t get is a new Gran Turismo (GT) version, as the previous generation, internally dubbed, F07 was discontinued in 2017.

The interior of the 2024 BMW 5 Series will, no doubt, be packed to the brim with the latest tech. Unfortunately, the entire interior is fully covered, including the steering wheel.

When To Expect the Next-Gen BMW 5 Series

The next-gen 5 series is still some years away, as the new 5 Series is expected to make an official debut late in 2023 as a 2024 model. By that time, we will surely get a lot more details regarding the model’s specifications. From what little we manage to see, we think the G60 5 Series will give us a bit a slightly more nostalgic design language, reminiscing of BMWs made between the 1960s and 1980s. This could be a nice transition to a more retro-futuristic design in the future. One thing is certain, the legacy of the BMW 5 Series will continue, at least for another generation.
