Just in case you are tired of watching drag races, Hoonigan has raised the bar by pitting two real-life versions of fictional vehicles against one another. The two contenders couldn’t be any different even if they wanted. The famous Warthog, which is a military vehicle from the Halo franchise takes on probably the fastest DeLorean in the world. One is One of the cars has twice the horsepower, but also twice the weight, while the other isn’t exactly famous for its reliability. Regardless, the results are definitely interesting.

Halo Warthog

While the Halo franchise doesn’t familiarize you with the ins and outs of the Warthog, this particular one is based on a modified rock-crawler chassis made by Red Dot Engineering. The platform has been made longer and wider in order to replicate the Warthog’s substantial size. This, however, comes at the cost of lightness, as the Warthog tips the scales at 6,500 pounds (2,948 kg), despite the whole body being made from aluminum.

On the other hand, it has plenty of power thanks to the 440 cubic-inch (7.2-liter) Ford small-block V-8, which has two Garett turbochargers strapped to it. It’s, basically, the same engine as Ken Block’s Hoonicorn and, in here, it makes 1,060 horsepower. All that goes to both rear axles or, if you choose, just the rear, through a four-speed automatic gearbox. The best part is that, unlike most interpretations of the Warthog, which are usually movie props, this one is a fully functional vehicle and a proper off-roader.

DeLorean DMC-12

Okay, this one is not actually a “Back to the future” replica, as it doesn’t feature all the fictional “high-tech” stuff we see on the movie car. What it does feature is a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 from a Kia Stinger GT, which puts out 487 horsepower to the rear wheels. This has to be one of the most unexpected, but sensible engine swaps you can do to a car. It’s also mated to a Porsche six-speed manual transaxle, with a limited-slip differential.

Nick Reed – the owner of the car – claims that it’s the fastest DeLorean in the world. A bold claim, given that there are 2JZ-swapped and LS-swapped DeLoreans out there, but apparently, this one is the first one to do the quarter-mile in the 11s, with a trap speed of over 120 mph (193 km/h). You wouldn’t be able to do that with the stock 2.0-liter PRV V-6 engine, which made 130 horsepower (150 for Europe) and 153 pound-feet (207 Nm). At 2,725 pounds (1,236 kg), the DeLorean is over two times lighter than the Warthog. And, of course, let’s not forget the gullwing doors.

The Races

The first drag race is a heads up, at 1,000 feet. Will the DeLorean go back ti the future after 88 mph? The Warthog runs on rear-wheel-drive only for the first race, which causes traction issues. The DeLorean won by a few car lengths.

The second race is also from a dig, but this time, it’s at 500 feet and Warthog gets the hit, while DeLorean gets “Stage 2 Ballast Boys”. With all the advantages, the much heavier Warthog managed to win the second race.

Round 3 is, once again, from a standing start and at 500 feet, but this time, it’s a proper heads up race. Warthog runs in four-wheel drive, while the DeLorean struggled for traction between first and second gear. This time, it was a photo finish. And “This” won the race, in this “This vs That” episode on Hoonigan. It’s extremely rare to see two very different vehicles that turn out to be extremely well-matched in a drag race.
