What according to you are impressive specs for a fast car on a drag strip? About 1,000 horses and a sub-10-second time? I’m sure a car that can achieve this will have your attention. But, what about a car that can make 3,250 horses and clock sub-seven-second times? You’ll probably tell me to get out of here, but hey, I’m not kidding.

Will Dugas, the owner of a second-gen Dodge ‘Juggernaut’ Viper, has managed to complete a quarter-mile in 6.8 seconds at the Hail Mary Derby! This is now officially the world’s quickest Dodge Viper. That has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

6.89 Seconds In A Dodge Viper Is No Joke

Dugas has been working on this car for a long time now. In the past, this Viper has clocked a time of 7.14 seconds multiple times with a trap speed of 211 mph. Before the record-breaking attempt, the Texas-based owner said that they’ve done some eighth-mile testing and clocked it in 4.5 seconds. He noted that keeping the front wheels grounded was the biggest challenge, and if they can manage to keep the suspensions tamed, it can achieve six-second times on any surface.

In the first run, the car did it in 7.06 seconds with a trap speed of 209 mph. The next run was completed in 6.963 seconds with a trap speed of 211 mph, which matched the record to the 1000th of a second set by Sal Patel nine years ago. Interestingly, he was at the Derby, too, prepping his 18-year old son to break his record.

Finally, on Day 3, this car managed to complete the run in 6.89 seconds, thus becoming the quickest Dodge Viper in the world!

What Changes Were Made To The Record-Breaking Viper V-10?

The car is powered by the fifth-gen Viper V-10 that displaces at 8.4 liters. Instead of making 640 horses, it makes 3,250 of them! Complementing it are a couple of 88-millimeter Garrett turbochargers and performance headers. Bigger injectors, a high-performance intake manifold, and a five-inch dual exhaust system are some of the other components that help make this a performance beast. It even features a MoTeC ECU.

Power hits the wheels via a built three-speed Turbo 400 automatic gearbox, and then routed to the ground through Mickey Thompson drag tires. It even comes with an independent rear suspension setup. The car runs on an ethanol diet, which sure boosts the performance because it has a higher octane when compared to gas and provides a cooler intake charge that results in more power.

Sal Patel’s 18-Year Old Beat His Record Earlier

Sal’s 18-year old son, Milan Patel, took over the reins from his dad and beat the nine-year-old record at the event. He took 6.956 seconds for the quarter-mile run with a trap speed of 203 mph. If not for Dugas’ 6.89-second run, the teen would’ve held the record for now.

Considering the previous record stood for nine years, do you think the 6.89-second record will be held for long too? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.
