In the States, people show next to zero interest for diesel-powered cars, but in Europe, they are still a big thing. Gasoline-powered cars are starting to see more attention, and while you may think that emissions have a lot to do with this, you are wrong: the main reason is the price of diesel which is trending higher than the price of gas.

Well, in a world where people are not paying much attention to diesel cars anymore, Alpine launched the DS4 Grand Coupe. Based on the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, the DS 4 takes its design inspiration from the Alpina B4 and the engine from the D3 S. The model is priced at €79,700 (about $84,000 at the current exchange rates) and deliveries should start in early September.

What powers the Alpina D4 S Gran Coupe?

The D4 S features the same powertrain as the D3 S: a bi-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six paired with a 48-volt starter generator. The system delivers a total of 355 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque. All the power is sent to all four wheels via a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission mated to BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The sprint from 0 to 60 mph is made in 4.8 seconds, while top speed goes up to 168 mph. When compared to the D3 S, the top speed remains unchanged, but the 0 to 60 mph sprint time went up 0.2 seconds. All these improvements were possible thanks to the addition of new Alpina intercoolers, a transmission cooler, a high-performance cooling system, and an electromechanical coolant pump.

Alpina D4 S Enhancements

Since the 4 Series Gran Coupe is already a very elegant car, the new D4 S comes with very few exterior enhancements, the most important of which are new front and rear spoilers. Alpina’s sport exhaust system with the four end exhaust pipes adds an even sportier touch. The car rides on a new set of 20-inch wheels in the classic 20-spoke design. They come standard with Pirelli P Zero ultra-high-performance tires, while Pirelli Sottozero Series II winter tires are offered as an option. Stopping power is ensured by 15.6-inch front brake discs and four-piston calipers. You can choose between a wide range of finishes, including the traditional Alpina Blue and Alpina Green metallic paints.

The cabin is trimmed in Lavalina leather, while standard equipment will include heated seats and steering wheel, and the latest BMW assistance systems like the Parking and Driving Assistant. The new D4 S Gran Coupe will also be equipped with a special Alpina Sport Suspension with three variable sport settings.

The DS 4 Gran Coupe is already available for ordering, and the first deliveries will start in September. Prices will start from €79,700 (about $84,000 at the current exchange rates).
