DeLorean Motor Company, the Texas-based automaker has announced a reveal date for its upcoming concept car. Now, although the EV will be displayed on the lawns of Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 21st, the concept will be unveiled, three days earlier on August 18th.
What do We know so far?
So what can you expect from a historic brand that is about to be reincarnated years, if not decades, after it went out of production? Is it going to stay faithful to the original or adapt to the current era?
Well, I have that very question, as DeLorean will be brought back to life, with a more modern design that looks radically different from the classic, later this year. The bodywork, as you know will be developed by Italdesign once again.
The automaker has revealed the first official sneak peek, which, although, is just a snippet of the vehicle, is far more substantial than the relatively basic animated video unveiled back in February.
What is almost immediately apparent is that the angular design of the OG DeLorean DMC-12 will make way for far more curvaceous and seductive lines.}
Nostalgics, however, will appreciate the car retaining those rear window louvers, similar to the classic. What about those new taillights? Those iconic blocked units have been ditched, for a far more futuristic and rather simplistic design made up of horizontal lines!
By the way, the massive diffuser at the bottom of the bumper has no exhaust pipes because the next-gen DeLorean will be an EV. I get that things can’t be as boxy as they were back in the 80s owing to modern safety norms and regulations, but at least a hint of the boxiness wouldn’t be so bad now, would it?
One modern car that certainly seems to capture the spirit of the 80s is the Hyundai IONIQ 5. But, more than anything, I wish the upcoming car brings back that stainless steel aesthetic.
Save the date
According to the DeLorean Motor Company, the past, present, and future of the brand will be shaped through a series of activities showcasing the automobile at this year’s Monterey Car Week.}
The concept will represent a culmination of four decades of history with Italdesign, and will also see the announcement of the official name. It all comes down to August 18th now. We'll have to wait and see if the new design wins over hardcode 'Back to the future' fans. Meanwhile, keep an eye out for further peeks and facts regarding the new DeLorean.
