In Another Universe, Alfa Romeo Is Owned by Volkswagen

In a universe where Volkswagen owns Alfa Romeo, the brand might not be in such a bad position

Alfa Romeo might be in dire straits today, and even struggling to stay alive, but it didn’t have to be that way

Back in 2011, Ferdinand Piëch, the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen Group wanted to buy Alfa Romeo

He made a speech at the Geneva Motor Show that year, promising that under VW, Alfa would be selling 400,000 models by 2016.

A few weeks later, Piëch went even further, saying that under VW ownership Alfa would receive Porsche engines

The very first engine in question, a new turbocharged flat-four, ended up being featured in the 2016 Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman instead.

Unfortunately, Alfa wasn’t convinced and told autocar “We shut the door in their faces, and now they are trying to get into the window.”

Alfa should have taken the opportunity, though, as in 2018, under the FCA umbrella, it was only able to sell 122,533 cars – a far cry from the 400k or more promised by Piëch.

That’s not the end of the story, though

In 2018, VW’s head honcho, Herbert Diess, tried once again to convince FCA to sell Alfa Romeo.

As the story goes, it was Piëch’s life-long dream to see Alfa under VW ownership.

Even after sitting down with FCA’s then-CEO Mike Manley, selling Alfa Romeo to VW just wasn’t going to happen.

Diess, apparently, “considered it was his duty to follow through with Piëch’s request,” so at least he tried.

Still, one can help but wonder if Alfa Romeo would be a lot better off had a deal gone through

Unfortunately, we’ll never know, but it’s nice to think that, in another universe, perhaps, there are Porsche-powered Giulias roaming the streets of America.
