Mat Watson from ‘Carwow’ brought two German beasts to the drag strip for another fascinating race. This time, it’s the Audi RS5 versus the BMW M440i Gran Coupe. While the M440i is a sporty version of a regular trim, the RS5 is a full-blown performance model. The latter even makes more power and weighs less. Do you think the BMW stands a chance here?

What Powers Both These Cars?

Both the cars have eight-speed automatic gearboxes with all-wheel-drive systems. The BMW weighs 4,189 pounds (1,900 kilos), nearly 400 pounds more than the Audi that tips the scales at 3,792 pounds (1,720 kilos).

The BMW Goes In As The Underdog Here

The first drag race was an easy win for the Audi RS5. It was the quicker of the two right from the second they started and it kept at it till the end. The BMW M440i wasn’t a slouch by any means, but it wasn’t fast enough for the Audi. The Audi completed the quarter-mile distance in 12.1 seconds, whereas the BMW M440i took 12.6 seconds.

They moved to the half-mile rolling race from 50 mph after this, with the cars in comfort settings and the gearbox locked in automatic mode. The BMW M440i had a better kickdown and went ahead of the RS5. The RS5 started edging towards it and managed to get its nose ahead at the half-mile mark to win the race.

They tried it again from 50 mph, but this time with the cars in sportiest settings and gearbox locked in manual mode. The BMW M440i won this won, but it can be pinned on Mat not calling the race right. It was all in fun spirit, but things could have been slightly different if both the drivers had the same reaction times. Well, we’ll never know. Point – BMW M440i.

The last round was the brake test from 100 mph. The cars stopped nearly next to each other, but it looked like the Audi won this by a hair’s length. Overall score – 3-1 to the Audi RS5.
