If you are a car enthusiast, you probably know of the 1964 Ford GT40 and that it is one of the most iconic American sports cars ever made. After numerous attempts at a spiritual successor, Ford came up with the 2005 GT. With that said, even the sequel to the icon is too expensive for most. Luckily, there are alternatives and our investigation stumbled upon a listing in the Facebook group Fiberclassics handcrafted cars, kit cars, Replicas. An almost finished, 2021 Superlite GT-R kit car has been listed by Facebook user, Jon Leone, and it looks like a worthy, budget-friendly alternative to the American icon.

According to the listing, the owner bought the rolling chassis from Superlite in November 2021 but has since lost interest due to the lack of time. The Superlite GT-R is available with either a fiberglass composite or carbon-fiber body. This one seems to be the latter and sits on top of Sueprlite’s very own, aluminum semi-monocoque chassis. It seems like most of the heavy lifting is done since the body is fully assembled on top of the chassis.

The carbon-back racing seats and all parts necessary for the build go with the car. The images also show a front windshield, wiring harness, and air-duct plumbing, all of which need to be installed. The same goes for the Graziano, six-speed transmission that comes as standard with the Superlite GT-R. The asking price, with all parts needed to complete the build, is $70,000, but for an extra $15,000, the seller is willing to throw in a Chevrolet LT4 crate engine.

The same engine can be found in many of GM’s high-performance models, most notably the C7 Corvette Z06, where it puts out 650 horsepower (485 kilowatts) at 6,400 RPM and 650 pound-feet (861 Nm) at 3,600 RPM. Of course, you can choose a different engine as the engine bay of the Superlite GT-R is designed to accommodate any of the popular V-8 engines used in project cars.

Many people would not give a second look to a kit car that is attempting to pose as an American icon. However, the Superlite GT-R has proper motorsport know-how behind it. The same engineers that developed the kit car from the ground up successfully won the Super Unlimited National Championship and every NASA race they entered, with their other model, the Superlite SL-C. While you may argue whether or not it is a great recreation of the Ford GT40, it’s more affordable than a used Ford GT as values are well into the $200,000 range.
