The Taycan has been Porsche’s best-selling non-SUV so far in 2021, so it was no surprise when Porsche ushered in some pretty decent improvements for the 2020 model year, nor was it a surprise when the brand launched the off-road focused Taycan Cross Turismo. It’s pretty obvious that Porsche is dead set on expanding the Taycan into what could almost be its own standalone brand, with rumors indicating that we could even see a Taycan Coupe, Turismo, or road-focused Sport Turismo wagon. Well, as it turns out, Porsche showed up to the L.A. Auto Show with not one but two new Taycans – the aforementioned Taycan Sport Turismo and the new Taycan GTS. It seems Christmas has come a little early this year, folks.

The Taycan GTS in Brief

New to the Taycan lineup is the Taycan GTS – basically the car that will slot in between the 4S and Turbo, The most notable piece of standard equipment is the introduction of the SportDesign package, which includes a new front fascia, new side skirts, and the glossy black window trim. As expected, the side skirts now feature the GTS logo and the diffuser in the rear has a glossy black inlay. 20-inch, satin black, Turbo S Aero Design wheels come standard and are exclusive to the GTS. Finally, the exterior is finished off with the Porsche LED logo on the rear decklid, to go with matte black badge on trunk lid, matrix headlights, and at the base of the mirror caps.

Moving into the power department, the Taycan GTS delivers a cool 590 horsepower, which places it at a 128-horsepower advantage over the Taycan 4S but 80-horsepower short of the Taycan Turbo. With this kind of power output, the new Taycan GTS sits in the sweet spot between the two and can hit 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds with launch control engaged. The powertrain includes a dual-motor setup for AWD and a 93.4-kWh battery as standard – the same battery from the Turbo and the Turbo S. According to Porsche, a 270-kW charging rate will take you from five percent to 80-percent charge in just 22.5 minutes.

In terms of handling and driving dynamic, Porsche pretty much thought of everything. The new GTS has the same adaptive air suspension as the Taycan Turbo, although tuned and calibrated specifically for the GTS. Six-piston brake calipers from the 4S land up front with 390-mm rotors (30 mm larger than those of the 4S, by the way). The GTS does, however, feature the same exact brakes in the rear with the 358-mm rotors, but you can opt for the optional carbon-ceramic brakes if you want the best of the best.

Taycan Sport Turismo in Brief

If you were turned on by the Taycan Cross Turismo, but aren’t the type that really likes to venture into the wilderness, then we’ve got good news for you. It’s called the Taycan Sport Turismo, and it blends the gorgeous wagon body style with the road-going nature of the Taycan GTS. The jacked-up suspension and wheel-arch cladding are gone, so the Sport Turismo rides just has low to the ground as the new GTS, making for a lower center of gravity and sportier driving dynamic. The rear spoiler has also been finished in the same color as the body to help differentiate the Sport Turismo from the Cross Turismo.

The Sport Turismo can be equipped with the same glass roof offered on the Cross Turismo, but you can also opt for a new panoramic roof with variable light control. This new panoramic roof is downright crazy and features nine liquid crystal film segments that allow for four different selectable modes. Matte is the default color when the vehicle is off, but can be selected in other instances, but you can also choose from clear, Semi (40-percent tint), and bold (60-percent tint) patterns. This isn’t specific to the Sport Turismo, though, as Porsche is also said to be offering the same roof on the sedan.

Since the Sport Turismo is a wagon of sorts and is meant to offer an elevate delve of practicality, there are some other options too. For example, you can buy the optional roof rails or the rear-mounted bike rack from the Tequipment catalog, and there will undoubtedly be more available in the future too. As for pricing and availability, both the Taycan GTS and Sport Turismo are currently available to order, and Porsche should be making customer delivers in the second quarter of 2022. Range figures and in-depth performance figures will be announced at a later date. If you’re going to go for the new 2022 Porsche Taycan GTS, you’ll have to pony up $131,400 or $27,600 more than the 4S but $19,500 less than the Taycan Turbo. The Sport Taycan GTS, on the other hand starts out at $133,300 plus the obligatory $1,350 destination fee.
