A while back we shared everything we knew about the soon-to-be-unveiled Mercedes AMG SL. The normal version of the upcoming SL was spotted running tests last year and, not long after, the AMG version showed up in camouflage – a couple of times. Each time, we got footage of it, it revealed more and more of its design, and now, it’s almost “naked”, as it seems the roadster has “undressed” most of its camouflage.
That said, AMG’s involvement means that the 2022 Mercedes AMG SL will not only be fast in a straight line, but it will also be more eager to go around corners and feel lighter on its feet. It’s also worth noting that the new SL looks a lot more athletic. The lack of camouflage now reveals a much tighter and more athletic design language, strongly reminiscent of the AMG GT. This is no coincidence, as former AMG executive Tobias Moers said the new SL is developed alongside the AMG GT model.
We expect four different powertrains for the 2022 AMG SL. The entry-level will be the AMG SL53, which will come equipped with a mild-hybrid system focused around a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six, with an output of 435 horsepower and 384 pound-feet (520 Nm). The estimated 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) time is 4.2 seconds.
All other versions will have the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 unit. Three versions will be available, the first of which has 522 horsepower and around 480 pound-feet (650 Nm). We know that the SL63 will produce 612 horsepower and 627 pound-feet (850 Nm), while the top-of-the-line SL73 will use the SL63 powertrain, coupled to a 204 horsepower electric motor for the rear axle, for a combined output of 800 horsepower and 738 pound-feet 1,000 Nm).
