The second-generation Toyota GR86 was announced back in “2021” and offers a lot of improvements when compared to its predecessor, in terms of both looks and technical features. For the 2023 model year, the GR86 lineup was upgraded with the addition of a third choice - next to the current GR86 and GR86 Premium versions. It's called simply the 2023 GR86 Special Edition, and it is based on the GR86 Premium grade and will be limited to only 860 units.

The Special Edition GR86 is finished in an exclusive Solar Shift orange paint combined with a pair of black stripes running on the rear pillar. Another special feature is the set of GR matte-black 18-inch wheels offered with black center caps and black lug nuts. They are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. As final touches of the exterior, the model adds a ducktail spoiler and the debossed "GR" logo.

While there are no upgrades under the hood, the GR86 Special Edition is equipped with a GR cat-back performance exhaust system with stainless steel pipes and black chrome tips. It should considerably improve the sound of the four-cylinder – in fact, Toyota said it will provide a “throatier sound”.

While Toyota offered no images of the interior, we know the Special Edition's cabin is trimmed in Ultrasuede/leather-trimmed combined with special "GR" badge finished in the same Solar Shift orange paint as the exterior. Other than that, the GR86 Special Edition should offer the same features as the GR86 Premium. We are talking about an 8.0-inch touchscreen that has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity as standard, a small-diameter, leather-wrapped steering wheel, a fully digital driver information display, and the choice of a six- or eight-speaker audio system.

The 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine delivers 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. When equipped with the manual transmission, the 0 to 60 mph sprint is made in 6.1 seconds, and fuel economy is rated at 20 city/27 highway/22 combined. The automatic will increase the sprint time to 6.6 seconds and the fuel economy to 21 city/31 highway/25 combined.

There are no details on how much the 2023 GR86 Special Edition will cost, but it will be priced higher than the 2022 GR86 Premium, which starts from $30,300.
