After being on the market for half-a-decade, Acura has decided to pull the plug on the NSX. However, the model will receive a last hoorah in the form of a Type S model. Acura announced that the NSX Type S will be unveiled at the Monterey Car Week in the coming week. It will be limited to 350 examples, 300 of which will be available for the U.S. This will be the first time an NSX Type S is being sold outside Japan.

What’s Special About The 2022 Acura NSX Type S

Acura has been on a ‘Type S’ spree lately. Earlier this year, two of its models, the TLX and the MDX, received the Type S treatment. Now, it’s the NSX’s turn. The NSX needs to introduction. Acura introduced the car’s second-gen in 2016 and it took the world by storm. The company, however, has decided to give the sporty badge a fitting send-off.

The details will be revealed when the car officially debuts, but some changes can be deciphered from the images. For starters, there are dark elements on the outside, like the rear spoiler and door handles. A Type S logo can also be seen ahead of the rear wheels. The NSX Type S also comes with a red engine cover that is reserved for performance products in the company’s lineup.

On the mechanical front, The NSX Type S could feature wider tires and different wheels, a different suspension tune, and a different exhaust note, too.

What Will Power The 2022 Acura NSX Type S?

This is a 3.5-liter, twin-turbo V-6 mill that’s mated to three electric motors. It was specifically developed for the NSX. The engine is mated to a nine-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and a Sport Hybrid All-Wheel-Drive system. One of these motors is mounted between the engine and the transmission, whereas the other two are on the front axle. The motors, together, make 83 horses and 163 pound-feet of twist.

The engine, on the other hand, churns out 500 horses and 406 pound-feet of twist.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the NSX Type S makes more than 600 horses and is quicker than the standard NSX.

The highly impressive specs of the second-gen NSX translated to an equally astounding career. The car raked in many accolades over the years, some of them being:

Final Thoughts

The Acura NSX Type S will debut at the Monterey Car Week on August 12. As mentioned earlier, only 350 examples will be made, 300 of which are reserved for the U.S. market. Also, this will be the only NSX available for the 2022 model year.

Honestly, 300 copies for the U.S. is an optimistic approach from considering the company has sold close to 360 examples of the NSX in the last two years. Also, let’s not forget that the NSX Type S will be noticeably more expensive than the standard model, which means it could start north of $200,000; well over the standard 2021 NSX’s starting price of around $160,000. But, the emotional angle to it could lead to the company selling them out in a short span of time.
