Maserati teased the Grecale a couple of years back and announced that it will debut in 2021. But, courtesy of the global chip shortage, the debut was pushed to 2022. Fast forward to the present day, and the Maserati Grecale is finally here. The Grecale slots itself below the Levante as the entry-level compact luxury SUV. But, the automaker has made sure it feels special. For starters, it will come with a high-performance Trofeo version that will be powered by the same 3.0-liter, V-6 engine that does duties in the MC20 supercar as well! It is, of course, a detuned version of the engine, but it still makes over 500 horses. Other than this, it is also pretty heavy on tech features and comes with up to four screens inside the cabin. Sounds like a sweet deal at the onset, doesn’t it?

How Many Trims Will The Maserati Grecale Be Offered In?

The Grecale will be available in three trims – GT, Modena, and Trofeo. There will also be a special limited edition model at launch, called the PrimaSerie Launch Edition.

What Powers The Maserati Grecale?

The Grecale will be offered with two engine options. The GT and the Modena trims will come with a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine. In the GT trim, it puts out 300 horsepower at 5,750 rpm and 332 pound-feet of torque between 2,000- and 4,000 rpm. In the Modena, the same engine makes the same torque with a slighter wider bandwidth (2,000- to 5,000 rpm), but pumps out 30 horses more.

The crown jewel, however, is the Trofeo trim.

Power is routed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox with both engines. They are slightly different versions, though.

As for the performance specs, the four-pot engine takes 5.6 seconds to sprint to 62 mph from a standstill in the GT trim, and 5.3 seconds in the Modena. From 0 to 124 mph, the GT and the Modena take 23.7- and 21.9 seconds, respectively. The Trofeo, as expected, takes the cake. It takes just 3.8 seconds to gallop to 62 mph from rest, and 13.8 seconds to 124 mph from rest.

How Is The Maserati Grecale On The Outside?

The Grecale has the signature Maserati traits. Maserati has been following this design language since the MC20. Overall, it sure looks like the Levante’s brother, but doesn’t look like a shrunken Levante. Up front you get tear-drop-shaped headlights that have a slight resemblance to the Ford Puma. You get a low-placed grille here that doesn’t look too aggressive; unlike the norm followed by most automakers these days.

The GT trim comes with 19-inch wheels wrapped in 235/55 section tires. The Modena comes with 20-inch wheels measuring 255/45 section at the front and 295/40 at the rear. The Trofeo rides on 21-inch wheels as standard. Up front, they are shod in 255/40 section tires, and at the rear, 295/35 tires. At the rear, you get boomerang taillights that are inspired by the Giugiaro 3200 GT. They gel well with the trapezoidal line and suits the overall persona of the SUV.

The dimensions differ by a few millimeters on every trim. It measures 191.3 inches in length, 77.9 inches in width, and 65.3 inches in height in the top-spec Trofeo trim. The wheelbase is 114.2 inches long on all three trims. It also happens to be the heaviest in this trim, thanks to the V-6 engine, tipping the scales at 4,469 pounds.

How Is The Maserati Grecale On The Inside?

The cabin looks luxurious in the images. But, what caught our attention is the number of screens you get in here. There’s a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch primary touchscreen system, an 8.8-inch secondary lower display that sits below the main touchscreen, and there’s a screen for the rear passengers. A clock face is also present and it’s technically a screen, too. For a compact SUV, that’s a lot of screens. You also get a 14-speaker Sonus Faber audio system as standard, and a 21-speaker setup as optional.

Maserati Grecale Folgore – A Fully Electric Grecale Is In The Works

Maserati also made the Grecale Folgore official – the Grecale’s fully electric version. It will draw power from a big 105 kWh battery pack with 400V technology. We had spotted it testing very recently, so no real surprises about its existence. The automaker also noted that it will make 590 pound-feet of torque. The Grecale Folgore will be available in an exclusive Rame Folgore exterior shade.

Conclusion

Maserati has noted that the Grecale will be available in Europe in the first half of 2022, and in countries like the U.S. and Canada this fall.

The Maserati Grecale was developed at the Maserati Innovation Lab in Modena, and it will be produced at the company’s Cassino plant.
