Ford Performance and Vaughn Gittin Jr. collaborated for a video and it’s driving us crazy… in a good way, that is. They venture to the Faroe Islands, a place that seems to be pulled out of a fairy tale, to have some fun with a 1,400-horsepower Mustang Mach-E. This 12-odd minute video covers a whole lot of aspects – drifting on winding roads, the smart 1,400-horsepower Mach-E, the resting bitch face sheep, and of course, the fantastic cinematography, amongst other things.

What’s The Video About?

When a carmaker makes a video like this, the highlight or the main plot generally revolves around the car. But, Ford Performance and Vaughn Gittin Jr have managed to successfully show to any skeptics out there that EVs can be just as much fun as fuel-powered cars, without putting the car in the spotlight the whole time.

We won’t spoon-feed you each and every scene, but you can see Vaughn Gittin drift around on the winding roads of the stunning Faroe Islands. He even communicates with his Mach-E, plays football with it, hugs his car, consoles it when it cries, stares at sheep, dances, and whatnot. It makes no sense if to be seen, but at the same time, it does.

The biggest takeaway is how subtly Ford showed that an EV can be just as good as an internal combustion car. They’re fun, they are strong on performance, and can be driven anywhere. In the end, when they’re calling it a day, the car still had a 68-percent charge left after so much action they endured. There was even a shot of Vaughn plugging the car to a charging point on a windmill – a scene that spoke volumes about the future of EVs.

And, while all this was going on, it was hard not to admire the incredible cinematography. All the drone shots were mesmerizing as well. I’d go out on a limb and say that this 12-minute video was more Fast and Furious and what we want than what Fast and Furious movies have been lately. Ford Performance and Vaughn Gittin Jr. have absolutely nailed it with this video. It looked like Ford will find it hard to fill Ken Block’s shoes, but it seems like Vaughn covers up for it even if the videos aren’t as hardcore as the former’s.

Let’s Talk About The Car

It was only fitting to use the Mach-E 1400 as the prototype since it was built by Vaughn’s company, RTR Vehicles, last year. The Mach-E 1400 is based on the GT model and it features seven electric motors that put out 1,400 horses combined! Three of these motors are mounted at the front and four to the rear in what Ford calls the ‘pancake style’. These 1,400 ponies can be split evenly between the front and the rear. A single driveshaft connects them to the differential which is said to have a wide adjustability range and can drift or run down a drag strip flawlessly.

But, there are a ton of other aero elements that aid performance. The car comes with large air vents, dive planes, a front splitter, and a rear wing. It can produce up to 2,300 pounds of downforce at 160 mph! The braking setup is also quite unique. It features a hydraulic handbrake designed for drifting that integrates with the powertrain controls, which means the driver will be able to shut down the power to the rear motors when required.

When you have seven motors and a battery pack that will be overworked, even the cooling system needs to be a lot more intricate than the system on the regular EVs. Ford and RTR have made use of a 56.8 kWh battery pack and it is different from the ones seen in mass-produced cars. It is made up of nickel manganese cobalt pouch cells that allow a high discharge rate, leading to higher performance. The battery also features a d-electric coolant that helps it cools down while charging.

The Mustang Mach-E 1400 might be a one-off model, but the learnings from it will be used in future Ford EVs.
