Toyota Is Expanding its GR Sub-Brand in the Best Way

Don’t Expect a Full-on GR-branded SUV anytime soon

Toyota’s GR sub-brand currently includes the Toyota GR Supra

And the Toyota GR86

There is a third model, the GR Yaris, but it’s not available here in the U.S.

The GR Yaris isn’t meant to come Stateside, but Toyota is planning more GR-branded cars for the U.S. market, and we’re not talking about SUVs

In an interview with Motor Trend,

Toyota’s EVP of Sales in North America, Bob Carter said “I don't want to eliminate anything, but initially no. The importance is exhilarating driving.”

“When you go to SUVs you have higher center of gravities and it's just not conducive. Nothing is off the table, but initially you can expect it to be a car-based vehicle. There's still a market for that.”

The means the most likely candidate to get the GR treatment next is the Corolla Hatchback

Rumor has it that it’ll be powered by the same 1.6-liter Engine from the GR Yaris

But it will be tuned to deliver some 296 HP and 270 LB-FT

That’s 39 HP and 5 LB-FT more than the GR Yaris

It will compete against the Volkswagen Golf GTI with 228 HP and 258 LB-FT

They Hyundai Veloster N with 275 HP and 260 LB-FT

And the Honda Civic Type R with 305 HP and 295 LB-FT

There’s no word on when we’ll see the next GR model, though, but Carter Suggests we’ll have more news in the next year, so we don’t have long to wait.
