Gazoo Racing, Toyota performance sub-brand responsible for cars like the Toyota GR Supra, GR Yaris, and the new GR 86 will be laying its hands on more cars in the future. And, by cars, I mean actual cars – not SUVs or crossovers in a move that will position Toyota outside of the norm of performance-oriented SUVs that have become just as common as normal SUVs.

The GR Sub-Brand Is Expanding In The U.S.

Since the GR Yaris isn’t sold Stateside, probably because it’s too small, here in the U.S. the GR lineup consists of just the 2020 Toyota Supra and the 2022 Toyota GR86. That’s going to change in the near future, though, as Toyota’s Executive VP of Sales, Bob Carter, has confirmed to Motor Trend that more performance cars are coming, with the idea of a GR-branded SUVs being shelved for at least the time being.

The most likely candidate to get the GR treatment next, and one that will be available in the United States is the Corolla hatchback. It has been the subject of conversation for the better part of a year, with everything from the mysterious tweet that Toyota USA made saying it was time that “the U.S. got a hot hatch to call its own” to a report in April of 2021 that promised the Corolla GR could be good for nearly 300 horsepower despite being powered by the GR Yaris’ 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine. As such, it would be prime contender for cars like the Volkswagen Golf GTi and the Honda Civic Type R.

Beyond this, there’s also potential for Gazoo Racing to have its way with the Camry, which in TRD form offers 301 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque from a rather throaty V-6 engine. In Motor Trend’s testing, that car could hit 60 mph in 5.8 seconds and ran the quarter-mile in 14.4 seconds, but GR could still do more and it would make for some interesting competition with the Sonata N-Line and Kia K5 GT.

When Will a New Toyota GR Model Arrive?

There isn’t a set time table for when Gazoo Racing will have its way with another car, but it doesn’t seem like we’ll have to wait that long.

If we’re going to hear news about a new GR in a year, that means we may see at least a concept or a prototype in the next year and a half, and that’s very good news.
