Recently, a new consortium offered close to $9.2 billion in order to buy Lamborghini off VAG. The offer was turned down and a new offer was made. That offer, too, was apparently turned down, but that doesn’t mean the German concern is not in the midst of deciding what to do with its assets. Bugatti has enjoyed a good run under VAG ownership and the French manufacturer continues to come up with limited editions based on the Chiron. With that being said, it appears not all is as good as it looks on the outside. Volkswagen Audi Group is currently debating on whether Bugatti should continue to be a part of the company's portfolio or not and a certain Croatian manufacturer might take the opportunity.

Actually, there have been talks about VAG selling Bugatti for a few years now and they might transfer the French company to Rimac. Volkswagen’s goal is to find the most cost-efficient way to electrify Bugatti. In addition, this transaction would allow Porsche to benefit from Rimac’s high-performance electric powertrain.

Why Volkswagen is considering selling Bugatti

And while those are faring quite well in the new age of electric propulsion, the smaller more exclusive brands like Bentley, Lamborghini, and Bugatti have barely stepped into the electrification scene.

It’s clear by now that Volkswagen does not want to spend millions restructuring the French hypercar maker. We were supposed to get a clear decision about Bugatti and Lamborghini’s fate in November last year, but that obviously didn’t happen.

We already know that Porsche is looking to build a strategic partnership with Rimac Automobili and the Croatian manufacturer is no stranger to joint ventures. This perfectly aligns with VAG’s plans to sell Bugatti, which in turn would solidify the partnership between Porsche and Rimac.

This inevitably means that should Bugatti go under Rimac ownership, it will use the Croatian carmaker's high-performance electric drivetrain. Whatever the final decision is, we expect to hear it sometime in the next few months.
