10 years ago, the Porsche would stand a chance, but can it keep up with a modern BMW?The folks from Carwow have brought an exciting drag race between two unique cars from different generations. On the left, we have a 10-year old 997.2-gen Porsche 911 Turbo S,. Next to that, a BMW M5 CS is in its current generation for the 2022 model year. They are “bonkers-hardcore-performance-thingy,” as Mat Watson wants to call them. But there are quite some differences between the two, since the M5 CS is a family sedan and the 911 Turbo S is a sports car. Also, on paper, the BMW has all the power to school the Porsche down the quarter-mile, but can the 911 Turbo S from 2012 really keep up? Let’s dive in.

BMW M5 CS

The M5 Competition Sport is a full-on high-performance sedan that comes with a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8. It cranks out a healthy 635 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque through eight-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The M5 CS drives all four wheels via the xDrive system. The M5 CS from the video comes fitted with loads of carbon-fiber bits on both the outside and inside. As a result, it weighs 4,023 pounds. This high-performance Bimmer also comes with upgraded carbon-ceramic brakes, which can help it to perform better on the brake test. However, if you want to buy an M5 CS right now, be prepared to cash out at least $142,000.

The 911 Turbo S has been one of the best sports cars that can be used as a daily driver. The 997.2-gen Turbo S is now ten years old and still can beat many present-day sports cars. Powering it is a 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine that belts out 530 horses and 516 pound-feet of torque. It drives all four wheels via a seven-speed PDK. Unlike the M5 CS, the Turbo S is almost stock with carbon-ceramic brakes. However, the brakes are ten years old, and so are the braking electronics. The 911 Turbo S weighs 3,494 pounds, making it a a bit lighter compared to the M5. If you are in the market for a 997.2-gen Turbo S, it might cost you about $100,000.

The drag race

As the countdown ends, both the cars rush ahead, with the Turbo S having slight traction issues. But as both of them bolted, the M5 CS was inching forward slowly and ended the race before the 911 Turbo S. It was shocking to see a ten-year-old Porsche go head-to-head with a beast of a Bimmer. Nevertheless, both of them finished the drag race almost simultaneously. The M5 CS took 11.1 seconds, and the 911 Turbo S took 11.2 seconds. The following two races were rolling races from 50 mph. Again, both the races were won by the M5 CS, which is not surprising. It is about 100 horsepower more powerful than the Turbo S. Lastly, we have a brake test from 100 mph, and even this time, the Porsche couldn’t beat the Bimmer and lost by quite a significant margin. Watch the video below to have a more vivid picture.
