Sam from ‘Sam CarLegion’ uploaded another drag race video on his YouTube channel, this time involving two big, all-wheel-drive SUVs. On one corner, we had the Range Rover Velar, and on the other, we had the BMW X5. On paper, the X5 was the underdog heading into the race because it is low on power and is the heavier of the two. But, it managed to make short work of the Velar. Amusing, right?

How Many Horses Does Each Of Them Make?

The Range Rover Velar P400 R-Dynamic is powered by a 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline-six engine with a mild-hybrid setup that puts out 395 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic gearbox routes power to all four wheels. As for the weight, the Velar tips the scales at 4,435 pounds.

The BMW X5 xDrive 40i also comes with a 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline-six engine that churns out 335 ponies and 330 pound-feet of twist. Here, too, you get an eight-speed automatic gearbox and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Not only is the X5 low on power on paper, but it is also heavier than Velar. It weighs 4,863 pounds, roughly 430 pounds more than the Range Rover.

Lopsided Races, But With A Twist

The first race was with the cars in the sport mode for the gearbox and traction control on. Now, seeing the specs, you’d assume the Velar to draw the first blood. But, as it turns out, it’s the heavier, less powerful BMW X5 that got off to a quick start. It managed to widen the gap with the Velar till the finish line to score a thumping victory.

The second round was a roll race from 31 mph (50 kph). The BMW was quicker at kickdown yet again, and it didn’t let the Velar get ahead. The latter had started catching on by the end, but it wasn’t enough to beat the German SUV. They repeated the race, but this time with the gearbox in manual mode. Did it make any difference? Nope, not at all. The BMW beat the Range Rover without breaking a sweat.

So, that makes it 3-0 for the SUV that seemed to be the underdog heading into the race. Was this the result you were expecting from this race? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section after you watch the video below.
