With over 23 million views, this is probably the most-viewed Kia Sedona in the world. The Detail Geek, run by Mitch, has over 2.86 million subscribers on YouTube and this is by far the most difficult vehicle that he has ever had to turn around.

Overview

Now the Kia Sedona is not the most exciting vehicle in the world. You might have seen them going about their business on a school run through your typical neighborhood suburb. However, this was no ordinary Sedona. What makes this one particularly interesting is the amount of garbage and months of abuse that it had endured.

What this Sedona was, was the definition of a living breathing Bio-hazard, I can’t believe someone used it as a family vehicle for this long before realizing that it genuinely needed some good old TLC. You had stains, mud, fries, dried-up candy, barbecue sauce, and pet hair on the inside. The floor was practically non-existent (okay I mean that metaphorically), but you get the idea.

Exterior

The Before

Okay, so on the face of it, the sheet metal itself doesn’t look all that bad. Nothing out of the ordinary as you had dust/sand caked onto the surface. This was obviously expected, given the time of the year. Considering this particular Sedona is only a couple of years old, the panels were free from any dents and dings. Not bad, eh? It was still rocking winter tires in the summer.

The After

Mitch began cleaning the exterior by starting out with a pre-wash that was used to loosen any dust, grime, and other contaminants stuck to the surface of the paint. A standard pressure washer was then used to hose down the Sedona. A special high-pressure washer was used to break up the muck on the underbelly of the vehicle. Mitch also paid particular attention to the running boards and the wheel wells. With these down complete, Mitch at least knew what he was working with now.

This wash was followed up by spraying on a thick layer of foam, letting it sit for a couple of minutes. A small brush was used to loosen up the gunk around the emblem, grille, and other difficult-to-reach spots. It was host time once again. This was followed by clay barring the panels, to further rid the surface of irregularities. A good machine buff and the exterior of this Sedona was given a new lease of life.

Interior

The Before

With the exterior taken care of, it was now time to address the elephant in the room; or in this case the room itself. The easiest way for Mitch to tackle this was to actually take out all the seats, as they would be easier for him to work on, when outside the vehicle. Doing this also gave him a chance to witness the extent of the carnage that lay in front of him. It gave him a proper birdseye view of everything that lay in front of them.

Honestly, there was so much trash on the floor that it was actually easier for him to begin cleaning the interior with the seats out. That way all the trash also won’t plug up the vacuum cleaner. At this point, the smell was so terrible and the order was so intense that he had to wear a mask throughout the cleaning process.

In the end, he was able to extract at least a couple of pounds of dust and garbage off of the floor of the Sedona. Next, it was time to address those stained the seats. Mitch uses Chemical Guys lightning-fast solution 20 to 1 and lets it sit for a few minutes before hitting it with the drill brush. With the Carpets and seats now clean, Mitch busted out the steamer to blast off all those plastic trim in between in the passenger food well on the doors et cetera.

The After

The final finishing touch was a good helping of 303 aerospace protector on all the plastic trim, which should last anywhere between 4 to 6 weeks, and with that, the Sedona was ready.

The End Result

For you and me, 37 minutes and 23 seconds is what it took, for this beast of a machine to get a complete makeover, and however, it took Mitch anywhere between 18 to 20 grueling hours to pull this thing together.

Now I get that minivans are supposed to be hard-wearing dependable machines that can withstand the kind of abuse that families throw at it, however in this case, I think it went too far. Leaving out so much junk to rot in your car would do more harm than good and one should definitely take the time out to maintain decent hygiene, especially when you’ve got kids.

Giving it a quick weekly clean-up will ensure that things don’t get out of hand as they did in this case. Now the reaction of the owners after seeing the end results was obviously priceless. In fact, the wife does admit that there might have been a few French fries in there, but it was the cleanest that they’d seen the car since they bought it.
