After what seems like an eternity, GM finally unveiled the highly anticipated 2023 C8 based Z06 yesterday

The highlight of the new car is its all-new powertrain. The latest Z06 features a new 5.5-liter V-8 engine that produces 670 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque

This will make the LT6, the most powerful naturally aspirated V-8 engine, ever fitted to a production car. But whats makes this new engine tick?

For starters, the new engine uses aluminum in the cylinder block, the pistons along with titanium connecting rods

The Corvette Z06 will also employ a flat-plane crankshaft with the new LT6, which has its origins in the C8.R race car

Unlike a cross-plane crankshaft that you'd typically find on muscle cars, a flat-plane crankshaft dominate the use of counterweights, which are used to balance engine vibrations, hence helping them rev harder

Despite this, a flat-plane crankshaft tends to vibrate more. GM Engineers got round this problem by using a bigger 104.3 mm Bore and a short 80.0 mm Stroke. This reduces the speed of the piston and in turn reducing secondary vibrations

As a result the new Z06 revs all the way to 8600 rpm, which is higher than any other Corvette in history

Speaking of revs, the engine note is also truly distinctive and sounds very exotic indeed. Chevy in fact spent millions in developing the right soundtrack for the 2023 Z06
