Teaser videos are becoming all the rage and Honda is the latest manufacturer to introduce us to its latest model, the 2022 Africa Twin adventure bike. It's short on details but big on inspiration.

Honda Reveals 2022 Africa Twin

Honda has fallen into the currently-popular trap of releasing a beautifully-filmed video revealing the 2022 Africa Twin which actually reveals pretty much nothing at all.

Yes, we get to look at the bike as it careers over rough terrain in the hands of Dakar Rally winner Ricky Brabec but that's about it. It is possible that this is the case as there are no significant upgrades to be revealed other than new graphics but actually there are some differences under the skin.

There are two models in the Africa Twin line-up: the standard Africa Twin and the Adventure Sports model, which features a bigger tank, tubeless tyres and electronic suspension.

The parallel twin cylinder engine has been enlarged to 1084cc from 998cc and is fully Euro5 compliant. The capacity increase is the result of a longer stroke and power is up to 101bhp from 94bhp. Torque is also up to 77.5lb.ft from 73lb.ft at the same 6250rpm ceiling. The torque curve is fattened from 2500rpm upwards. there is a single overhead camshaft and twin spark plugs and variable exhaust valve timing. The engine is lighter by 5.5lbs for the manual and 5lbs for the DCT version.

The electronics have also received an upgrade; a six-axis inertial platform located at the bike’s centre of gravity monitors roll angle/rate, pitch angle/rate, and yaw angle/rate in real time. It also manages rear-wheel traction via throttle-by-wire (TBW) and Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC), front-braking grip through cornering ABS, and front-wheel lift through wheelie control in addition to a new rear-lift control. There are four riding modes: Tour, Urban, Gravel, and Off-Road.

The Adventure Sport version gets Showa semi-active suspension whose action ties in with the selectable riding modes. Both models run on Metzeler Karoo tyres, 21-inch at the front and 18-inch at the rear.

A new aluminium rear carrier is now standard fitment and the Adventure Sport's adjustable screen is 4in. shorter.

Overall, the 2022 Africa Twin models incorporate gradual refinements as opposed to a wholesale revision.

No indication yet as to when the new models will be arriving in North America but we can expect an announcement soon.
