The S-Class has long been a harbinger of things to come for Mercedes. In addition to serving as the Tri-Star’s luxury flagship, the S-Class is often the first model to receive Mercedes’ newest innovations that later become commonplace in “lower” offerings, or the automotive landscape in general. For instance, the W220 generation (1998-2005) S-Class featured cutting-edge innovations like the keyless start and radar-based cruise control, which not only were fitted to later Mercedes models, but are now commonplace even in economy cars. Now, one of the innovative features first implemented in the S-Class, a 48V mild-hybrid system, has worked its way down to Mercedes’ popular midsize SUV, the GLE-Class, which is being completely revamped for 2024. It’s further indication that to see the automotive future, look to the S-Class.

Mercedes’ “mild-hybrid” 48-volt system was first introduced in the 2017 S-Class and dubbed EQ Boost. The small (less than one kWh) battery works in conjunction with an Integrated Starter Generator and acts as both a starter motor that can add horsepower and torque under short bursts of acceleration. For instance, in the upper-trim GLE models and the AMG 53 and 63 S versions, the hybrid unit adds up to 21 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque when called upon. It also negates the harsh judder often accompanied by the auto start/stop systems. While this system has found its way into other models, including the GLE 450 and GLE 580 models, all GLE-Class SUVs will now include the EQ Boost starting in 2024 models.

The refresh of the ’24 GLE, announced earlier this week, includes several other notable additions. The Off-Road Engineering Package, optional for the V-8 powered 580 model, adds more ground clearance and an under-ride guard that, coupled with the available air suspension, should benefit off-road ventures. It will also feature new looks with an updated front bumper with horizontal louvers and tweaked taillights with new color options and alloy wheels. Inside, the refreshed SUV includes a new steering wheel, chrome finish on the air vents, and armrest USB ports. A Trailer Route Planner will also aid in towing by using the navigation system to account for any hazards or difficulties associated with route planning while towing. The upcoming GLE is also fitted with Mercedes’ latest MBUX system.

Perhaps more notably, the new GLE features an option even the S-Class does not, a full plug-in hybrid model. The GLE 400 e will feature a 134-horsepower motor coupled with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder found in the GLE 350 for a total output of up to 381 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. According to Mercedes, the 400 e will run 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds, 1.2 seconds quicker than the gas-only 350 and a half-second slower than the inline-six-powered 450. Mercedes says the hybrid will prioritize electric driving when needed for added efficiency. The 400 e will be fitted with an 11kW AC onboard charger with a 60kW DC charger available as an option. Charging times and all-electric range have yet to be announced.
