The current generation (F90) BMW M5 is now five years old, which means that development for the next-generation model should be hitting its climax. As a matter of fact, our spy photographers have already captured prototypes of the next-generation M5 undergoing road testing in Europe. Of course, these prototypes are still wearing heavy camouflage, but an artist managed to digitally render what the next-generation BMW could look like based on these spy shots.

Thankfully, It Comes With A Normal Grille

These renderings are courtesy of Sugar Design, who illustrated the 2024 BMW M5's front and rear ends after analyzing the camouflaged prototypes. Starting with the front, BMW has thankfully resisted giving the M5 a ginormous grille. It is still wider than the current model, but not comically large by any means. In addition, it also gets new LED headlights with daytime running lights that now feature an inverted J-shaped pattern just like in the facelifted 3 Series. The bumper is also new, with its lower air intake featuring a hexagonal shape.

Moving towards the side of the M5, the grab-type door handles have been replaced by a more conventional flushed design, bringing it in line with new models such as the 4 Series GranCoupe. The signature Hofmeister kink also gets redesigned with a sharper edge. Lastly, the rear end has been given full-width LED taillights and a slightly different rear bumper.

The interior of the 2024 BMW M5 has not been digitally recreated though, which means we're left with our own imagination on how it could look like. What we can confirm based on our spy shots is that it will adopt the iDrive 8 Curved Display infotainment system that made its debut in the iX as well as its toggle electronic gear shifter.

What Could Power The 2024 BMW M5?

Unfortunately, there's not much else that we know regarding the upcoming 2024 M5. Rumors have suggested that the M5 will share the same plug-in hybrid twin-turbo V-8 powertrain of the XM flagship M SUV. This blends a new 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 and a set of electric motors that deliver a combined output of 644 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque that's sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic.

A more powerful version of this electrified powertrain sees duty in the XM Label Red, which is upped to 738 horses and 735 pound-feet of twist. Regardless of whatever version is used, the M5 is obviously a lighter car, so a 0-60 mph time of less than four seconds is pretty much guaranteed.
