The Hino Dutro (also known as the 300) is basically Toyota Dyna’s twin and both models share the same platforms. The standard cab Dutro is built on the U300 Platform, while the wide cab uses the U400 platform.
The vehicle is pretty flexible and it can be configured in a wide range of body configurations.
Unlike the Dyna, the Dutro is sold in Australia, Canada Chile, Colombia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and some countries in Latin America.
The previous generation was sold between 2005 and 2010 and came with a sharper style, a series of modern features and a stronger engine. Equipped with a 3.0 liter engine, the old Dutro had a maximum payload capacity of up to 1.5 tonnes.
The Nissan Frontier started its life back in 1997 when it came as a replacement for the old D21 Nissan Hardbody Truck.
The first generation of the Frontier (also known as the Navara) was designed as a small pickup truck which doesn’t offer the same towing abilities as a full sized pickup, but it comes with a better fuel consumption and a high level of versatility.
While the new generation Frontier can be considered a medium sized pickup, the 1997 model came with smaller dimensions and weaker engines being considered part of the small class of pickups.
The first generation Nissan Frontier wasn’t as muscular as the current model, but it was still a solid choice if you were seeking for a trustful and versatile working vehicle.
The 1997 Frontier was offered with various engines option and body styles included regular and Extended cabs. In 2000 there was also introduced a double cab version that was a worldwide premiere for a compact pickup.
The Mitsubishi L200 is around from some time now, but even since its inception the vehicle was considered a strong and reliable vehicle. Apart from its work horse character, the Mitsubishi L200 has also a pretty unconventional design which is a perfect combination between dynamism and practicality.
The vehicle is available in both chassis cab and pickup versions with single-, extended- and double-cab configurations. Worldwide, the L200 is highly appreciated and in UK is the best sold vehicle in its class.
The chassis cab version of the L200 leaves behind all the bells and whistles of the lifestyle models and offers a rugged and basic work horse able to get the heaviest jobs done without worrying about broking a nail or two.
The year 2003 brought only minor style and comfort upgrades for the Silverado. The most significant exterior changes were made to the front fascia. The interior was also slightly redesigned and the most striking modification is the new steering wheel which looks much better than the old one and gives the cabin a modern look.
There was also introduced the innovative Quadrasteer four-wheel steering system that was available on 1500 Extended Cab models and 1500 Heavy-Duty Crew Cab models. Other new optional features include an XM satellite radio and a more performant audio system. The engines lineup is the same as the previous one and consists of both V6 and V8 units.
After it was completely redesigned in 1999, the GMC Sierra has benefited from a few upgrades in 2003. With this occasion, the vehicle received a bolder front end and a few interior modifications.
There were also offered new comfort features which included a new sound system and an optional rear seat DVD entertainment center. Other upgrades were made to the brakes, while the engines were also slightly tweaked to run cleaner.
The entire engine lineup however, remained unchanged and the Sierra continued to be powered by the same units as the old generation.
The 2003 GMC Sierra continues to share the same underpinnings with its Chevrolet Silverado twin, but it’s considered slightly more upscale as it has more luxurious features than its brother.
Between GMC and Chevrolet there was always a strong bound, as these two brands shared a lot of platforms and technologies. It’s the same case for the Sierra truck that even since its inception shared the same design and engines with the Silverado.
A new generation Sierra was launched at the same time with the first Silverado pickup in 1999 and both models were based on the old Chevrolet C/K pickup.
The new Sierra represented a huge step forward in terms of engines and technology, undergoing a lot of upgrades which helped it climb to the top of the pickups food chain.
The 1999 GMC Sierra was offered with a new family of V8 engines and also some upgraded old units. There were various configurations available including regular or extended cabs, short bed or long bed, three trim levels and rear- or four-wheel-drive versions.
The year 1999 was a major one for Chevrolet. In this year, the company has launched on the market its completely redesigned C/K pickup and gave it a true identity.
The first generation Silverado was born from Chevrolet’s desire to come up with a better pickup, but the main problem was that the old truck was already a hot seller, so the new one needed to be at least as good as its processor.
In the end, Chevrolet’s gamble with the Silverado paid off and the new truck was a huge success. It had stronger engines, a better ride and also superior handling abilities. For its time, the Silverado was among the most luxurious trucks from the streets, yet its exterior design was still a half step behind the main rivals from Ford or Dodge.
Between the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra was a strong bound as Chevrolet and GM offered parallel lineups and except for a few exterior details and some unique features, the two models were basically the same.
The previous generation Dodge Ram was a big success for the company and Dodge didn’t risk to made radical exterior changes for the 2002 model. Hence most of the upgrades were made under the skin.
The newer generation may look very close to its predecessor, but it comes with radically improved driving dynamics and technologies which helped the Ram stay in front of the pack. This major update included an all new frame, suspension, powertrains and interiors.
The third-generation Dodge Ram 1500 came with a choice of 3.7 liter V6, 4.7 liter V8 and 5.9 liter V8 engines. The redesigned Ram trucks revamped Dodge’s sales with 400,000 units sold in 2002 and nearly 450,000 sold in 2003.
The Isuzu Hombre was the first pickup truck build by the company and was basically a rebadged Chevrolet S-10. The Chevrolet S-10 was also the base model for the GMC Sonoma and all these three clones shared the same design, and technologies.
Isuzu preferred this strategy, as it was the cheapest variant and the company saved a serious amount of money. The Isuzu Hombre was offered in both 4x2 and 4x4 configurations with either regular cab or extended cab body styles (Spacecab).
Like the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC Sonoma, the Isuzu Hombre is offered with 2.2, 4.3 V6 and a 4.3 Vortec engine. The vehicle was priced pretty competitively at $11.500 for the base rear drive model equipped with manual gearbox.
The Isuzu Hombre was offered with 36-month/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warrantee, a five-year/60,000 mile powertrain guarantee and roadside assistance.
At the beginning of the 90s, Dodge’s pickups flew under radar and its models never managed to conquer a healthy market share. In 1994 however everything has changed, after the launch of the innovative Ram pickup that took everyone by surprise.
The new Dodge Ram attacked its rivals with a modern style and one of the most comfortable and ergonomically designed cabins. There was also offered a complete lineup of engines which included both diesel and petrol units. Not to mention about the biggest payloads and towing capacities in the segment.
The 1994 Dodge Ram was offered in 118.7-inch and 134.7-inch wheelbases (6.5-foot and 8-foot boxes respectively). Engines options included 5.2, 5.9 and 8.0 liter engines.
The first Toyota Tacoma was introduced in the US market in 1995 and came as a replacement for the Hilux. Unlike the old Hilux (also known as the Toyota Pickup) the Tacoma was more refined and came with better ride quality, superior handling abilities and also a bigger payload capacity.
The Tacoma was considered for a long time one of the best pickups form the market, mostly due to its high reliability and versatility.
Unlike the American pickups, the Tacoma wasn’t only a basic, utilitarian workhorse as thanks to its comfortable cab and the decent ride quality it also coped great with non commercial applications and many used it as a lifestyle vehicle.
The Toyota Tacoma was available in both 4x2 and 4x4 configurations and came with a choice of 2.4, 2.7 and 3.4 liter engines which developed between 142 – 190 hp.
The Chinese manufacturers are getting stronger and stronger. We are also happy to see that they are fast learners too, as their products are evolving fairly fast.
One of the youngest Chinese companies is Foton which builds both trucks and passengers cars. Unlike other compatriots which are known solely in their home market, Foton decided to bet big and plays on an international level selling its vehicles all over the world.
However, the company is still working hard to convince us about the quality and reliability of its vehicles, as their Chinese origins aren’t exactly confidence inspiring.
The Tunland is the newest pickup build by the company and luckily, it doesn’t look identical with any other existing pickup from the market (in the past Foton was known for its copy and paste designs). The Tunland is marketed as being the strongest Chinese pickup in its class and joined the one tonne pickup market in 2012.
The vehicle is equipped with a 2.8 common rail turbo diesel engine and has a maximum payload of 1040 kg with a maximum towing capacity of 2500 kg.
