Ford’s all-new 2017 Super Duty is nearing its launch in dealerships across the country. But before that happens, Ford as been busy showing off the Super Duty and its new capabilities. Our friends over at TFL Truck experienced the off-road chops of the F-250 equipped with the FX4 package first hand with a Ford rep riding shotgun.

Those familiar with the FX4 package knows it includes several upgraded parts designed to help a truck manage challenging off-road terrain. In the case of this 2017 F-250, the package includes underbody skid plates, shock absorbers tuned for off-road use, and an electronically locking rear differential. Of course, the FX4 package is only offered on 4WD-equipped pickups.

However, it wasn’t just the FX4 package helping the big Super Duty navigate the tight dirt course. Ford’s 360-degree camera system can be turned of at speeds below five mph and helps the driver see what’s going on. When moving forward, a camera in the front grille displays a view of low-lying objects covered by the long hood. The same is true for the tailgate-mounted camera when in reverse – like any modern backup camera.

The video also shows other handy interior features, including the foldable and lockable storage bin under the second-row bench set. And it wouldn’t be a proper truck review without talking about the powertrain. This particular truck comes powered with the updated 6.2-liter V-8. New for 2017, the big gasser makes an impressive 430 pound-feet of torque. Horsepower is still rated at 385 like last year.

Despite not having the expensive, 6.7-liter Power Stoke turbodiesel V-8, this F-250 fitted with the Platinum trim level cost a whopping $68,020. That’s a chunk of change.

Why It Matters

The Ford Super Duty is a vastly popular pickup in the heavy duty segment. It competes with the GM twins, the Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500, along with the Ram 2500 and 3500. Ford had to nail this new generation of Super Duty since the competition is so strong.

Keep in mind, this is the first full-on, nut-and-bolt, all-new Super Duty since the truck’s inception in 1998. The Super Duty now has a stronger, fully boxed frame made from high-strength steel. The body is now fully aluminum, just like the F-150. The 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel’s output has been bumped to a class-leading 440 horsepower and 925 pound-feet of torque. And as mentioned before, the 6.2-liter gasoline V-8 now has 25 more pound-feet of torque over last year.

The 2017 Super Duty will undoubtedly sell well, but it’ll be interesting to see how well the new Super Duty weather the hard work done by the blue collar and fleet industry. It’ll also be interesting to see how these customers accept the new technology offered in the truck.
