The final generation of the legendary D Series was rebadged as the Dodge Ram when Lee lacooca took charge of the Chrysler Corporation.
The Dodge Ram D Series was sold until 1993 when it was replaced by a completely redesigned Ram which shortly after became one of the best sold pickups in US.
The D Series range included three models, namely the D-150, D-250 and D-350. The vehicles were available with both single and double cabs with either short or long beds. Power options included a wide range of engines with the base unit being a 3.9 liter, followed by 5.2 and 5.9 liter V8s.
The previous generation Dodge Ram was a big success for the company and Dodge didn’t risk to made radical exterior changes for the 2002 model. Hence most of the upgrades were made under the skin.
The newer generation may look very close to its predecessor, but it comes with radically improved driving dynamics and technologies which helped the Ram stay in front of the pack. This major update included an all new frame, suspension, powertrains and interiors.
The third-generation Dodge Ram 1500 came with a choice of 3.7 liter V6, 4.7 liter V8 and 5.9 liter V8 engines. The redesigned Ram trucks revamped Dodge’s sales with 400,000 units sold in 2002 and nearly 450,000 sold in 2003.
At the beginning of the 90s, Dodge’s pickups flew under radar and its models never managed to conquer a healthy market share. In 1994 however everything has changed, after the launch of the innovative Ram pickup that took everyone by surprise.
The new Dodge Ram attacked its rivals with a modern style and one of the most comfortable and ergonomically designed cabins. There was also offered a complete lineup of engines which included both diesel and petrol units. Not to mention about the biggest payloads and towing capacities in the segment.
The 1994 Dodge Ram was offered in 118.7-inch and 134.7-inch wheelbases (6.5-foot and 8-foot boxes respectively). Engines options included 5.2, 5.9 and 8.0 liter engines.
The first generation Dodge Dakota was commercialized between 1986-1996 and was a total success for the American company as the rugged nature of the truck conquered a lot of hearts. The second generation continued the success of its predecessor and came with a totally new style based on the bigger Ram model, but technical upgrades were pretty limited.
The new Dodge Dakota was available in three different wheelbases combined with single, extended or double cabs.
The 1997 model kept the same powertrains as its predecessor and was offered with a choice of 2.5 liter, 3.9 liter and a 5.2 liter V8. The truck has a maximum payload capacity of 1179 and can tow up to 3084 kg.
In late 1980s, Dodge decided to try its luck in a completely new segment and thrown itself in the compact pickup race. Dodge’s first compact pickup model was named the Dakota and competed against strong opponents like the Toyota Tacoma or Nissan Frontier.
The Dakota’s size was one of its main advantages as placed it into the big gap between the small and big full-size trucks.
Thanks to its relatively compact exterior dimensions and a smart chassis design, the Dodge Dakota had good road manners with a forgivable ride and a proper handling.
The vehicle was offered in both 4x2 and 4x4 configurations with a choice of V6 and V8 engines which develop 210 hp and 230 hp, respectively. Dodge ended production of the Dakota in 2011, but has promise to come up with a replacement.
The new Dodge Ram Cargo van was launched in 2012 and was designed as a small commercial hauler aimed at small business owners. The vehicle features a class-leading capability and low total cost of ownership offering a generous cargo area which makes it perfectly suited for a wide range of commercial applications.
The Dodge Ram Cargo Van is based on the same platform as the Chrysler minivan, but it features a higher payload capacity.
The vehicle has a starting price of $ 22430 and it’s powered by a 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine which delivers 283 hp and 260 lbft or torque.
The Dodge Ram chassis cab is one of the most rugged trucks in its segment. The vehicle comes in a wide range of models and its highly versatile character makes it able to do the toughest duties without breaking a sweat.
The truck is available in three weight classes 3500, 4500 and 5500 with either single or crew cab configurations. The truck competes against models like the Ford Heavy Duty and Chevrolet Silverado. The Dodge Ram Chassis Cab received a set of upgrades in 2011 which enhanced the truck’s performances and also added a few fresh design lines to the exterior.
