The GMC Canyon is getting another new trim line for 2017 – the All Terrain X. This is package adds to the carry-over All Terrain trim level available on 2015 and 2016 Canyon pickups. This is on top of the new 2017 Canyon Denali GMC has previously announced. And as typical, there are no mechanical upgrades unique to the option package. Rather, the updates consist of slight cosmetic changes designed to spark customer interest.

So what’s different about the All Terrain X? It boils down to an aggressive set of all-terrain tires and all-weather floor liners.

Yep, tires and floor mats. Still, the additions make the All Terrain X more capable off the beaten path and easier to clean up when the wheeling is done. Aside from the X portion, the All Terrain package includes several upgrades over the standard 4WD Canyon pickup. We’ll get into that below.

Lastly, the 2017 model year brings a significant powertrain upgrade for the Canyon. Like its corporate cousin, the 2017 Chevy Colorado, the GMC Canyon is getting the same heavily upgraded 3.6-liter V-6 and new eight-speed automatic transmission. Three horsepower and six pound-feet of torque accompany the addition of Active Fuel Management, a reworked variable valve timing system, and an upgraded direct fuel injection system. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder and 2.8-liter Duramax turbodiesel are unchanged.

The 2017 Canyon will go on sale in Q4 of 2016.

What makes the GMC Canyon All Terrain X different

Ordering the All Terrain X package adds two items not found on the standard All Terrain package: Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires and all-weather floor liners. The DuraTrac tires, sized at P255/65R17 on the Canyon, have quickly become a favorite OEM-spec tire around the industry. The Chevrolet Colorado Trail Boss, Colorado Z71 Midnight, Silverado Z71 Midnight, and even the Ram Power Wagon all use the meaty Goodyears.

Besides the tires and floor mats, all the upgrades normally found with the All Terrain package are present. This includes specially tuned shock absorbers, a transfer case skid plate, hill descent control, trim-specific 17-inch wheels, side step bars, a spray-on bedliner, a body-color grille surround, body-colored bumpers, and trim-specific interior upgrades that include red-stitched seats with the All Terrain logo and seat heaters, remote start, automatic climate control, and a sliding rear window.

The All Terrain X package is available only of the SLE trim level with 4WD. The new 3.6-liter V-6 is the standard engine, but the 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder turbodiesel is optional.
