The Land Rover Defender is about as iconic as they come, getting its start some 68 years ago and remaining relatively unchanged despite the six decades that’s past. However, nothing lasts forever and the classic Defender is on its way out, soon to be replaced by a more modern vehicle that will hopefully be available worldwide thanks to updated emissions and safety standards. To commemorate the Defender’s ride into the sunset, Land Rover has commissioned three special edition models in a “Celebration Series.” The trio includes a Heritage Edition painted in the classic soft green, a top-of-the-line Autobiography Edition, and this – the off-road ready Adventure Edition.

The Adventure Edition package includes some specific upgrades that make tackling an African safari trip or mountain expedition that much easier. Most noticeable are the knobby Goodyear MT/R tires and swanky alloy wheels. The large front skid plate and side rocker panel guards also top the list. Topping the Defender itself is a full size roof rack and engine snorkel. Add to that the special Phoenix Orange paint color accented by the black hood and grille to call attention to itself, and the Adventure Edition Defender makes for an appropriate send-off.

To help commemorate the current Defender, Land Rover went back to the Defender’s roots – tracing back to Red Wharf Bay where the rugged SUV was dreamt up. A plan was brewed to trace a Defender’s silhouette in the sand before the tide erased it forever. However, the tracing was no stick drawing, but an outline that stretched a kilometer across. The Adventure Edition Defender certainly looks the part. Its rugged good looks and squarish design still hark back to the first Defender models. The added off-road equipment makes the vehicle ready the trails right from the factory. The extra skid plating, while not only looking good, adds the extra functionality of protecting the vital underbody components like oil pans, radiators supports, fuel tanks, and all the ancillary connections running back and forth.

A sealed air intake system topped with the high-rise snorkel gives the Defender the ability to wade water far deeper than most would ever dare to venture. It also keeps the air filter cleaner for longer by getting it further away from the dirty engine bay.

Black fender flairs and rubber mud flaps keep the paint protected from flying debris. The roof rack up top offers tons of room for extra cargo, spare tires, spare fuel, and a great mounting point for off-road lights. And speaking of paint, two other colors are available beyond the Phoenix Orange: Yulong White and Corris Grey.

Interior

Things inside the Adventure Edition Defender are decidedly different. Comfort was Land Rover’s key criteria. While it’s certainly no Range Rover, the Defender comes awashed in Windsor Leather on the seats and dashboard while the headliner, steering wheel, gear selector, hand brake lever, grab handles, and door panels are wrapped in slightly less expensive leather. Bright aluminum trim accents the clock, air vent bezels, door handles, and driver’s pedals.

Drivetrain

Under this Defender 110’s black hood lies a 2.2-liter, four-cylinder diesel engine putting out 122 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. While not a monster, the diesel provides enough low-end grunt to get the Defender up and over most terrain on earth. On-road performance, on the other hand, isn’t the best. With a top speed of only 85 mph and 60 mph coming in a lazy 14 seconds, street racing won’t be on the list of enjoyable adventures.

The engine is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox that turns the rear tires. Slip the manual transfer case into four-wheel-drive, and the front axle engages.

Sure, it’s already a year old, but the 10th Anniversary edition of the iconic Jeep Wrangler offers a nostalgic piece of American off-roading and war-time history on four wheels. Equipped with unique bumpers, wheels, paint colors, and placards, the 10th Anniversary edition is certainly set apart.

Under the hood is the same 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 as every other Wrangler. Making 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, the gasoline engine motivates both the two- and four-door Wrangler with ease. Transmission choices include a five-speed automatic and a six-speed manual.

Prices when new started at $31,420 for the two-door and $34,920 for the four-door. Of course, the Wrangler Rubicon is still available in the 2015 model year.

Mercedes-Benz G Wagon

The G-Class, or G Wagon, is the German counterpart to the Defender and Wrangler. Its roots date back decades with nearly no major changes past interior and engine upgrades. As a German military vehicle, the G Wagon has a proven record of handling rugged terrain. Its solid axles front and rear provide a beefy foundation for the square-body SUV.

Mercedes offers several engine choices for the G-Class. The base engine is a 3.0-liter diesel V-6 that provides 211 horses and 398 pound-feet of torque. Also offered in the G550 is a 5.5-liter V-8 making 382 horses and 391 pound-feet. Add to that two AMG models that strive for more on-road performance. The top dog G Wagon is the G63 AMG that rocks a 5.5-liter biturbo engine with 535 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque.

Pricing is on the expensive side of this trio. The U.S. spec G550 starts at $115,400 while the G63 AMG starts at a whopping $137,150.

Conclusion

Land Rover’s send-off for the iconic Defender seems well suited and stitched with historical significance. The additional features on board the Adventure Edition not only make it a great performer off-road, but also set it apart from other Defenders. Making it even more special, Land Rover will only built 600 examples for European consumption. Sadly, like all Defenders, it won’t be available in the U.S. thanks to strict emissions and safety laws.

Making up for the U.S. loss is the thought of some English royalty properly trudging over a grassy hill on his way to a hunting lodge nestled deep in the rolling countryside. It doesn’t get more British than that.

  • Leave it
    • * Underwhelming on-road performance
    • * Almost too valuable to beat on
    • * Not offered in the U.S.

Adventure Edition

The Defender has helped to establish Land Rover’s credentials as the expedition vehicle of choice and the Adventure Edition is designed for customers who want to explore.

To enhance the Defender’s already impressive off-road credentials, the Adventure Edition features distinctive new underbody protection for the side sills and engine sump, while Goodyear MT/R tyres promise to make the most of whatever grip is on offer.

The Adventure Edition comes in choice of three striking metallic colour options, which include Corris Grey, Yulong White and Phoenix Orange. The focus is firmly on comfort inside, where the Adventure Edition promises to provide high quality shelter from the elements. Premium seats with Windsor Leather upholstery available in four different colourways, perforated leather inserts and contrast stitching all add a touch of luxury.
