It is no secret that the SUV market has gone through the roof. With demand growing, manufacturers are producing more models than ever with prices that reflect those of premium sports cars. With so many choices available, deciding which one to buy can be tough. However, we might have a relatively straightforward answer. Toyota released the new version of its Sequoia earlier this year, and we believe it is one of the best choices out there.

The New Sequoia Is Based On The New Tundra

This may sound weird – why would anyone suggest that a premium SUV that is based on a truck is a good thing? Well, for various reasons. The new Tundra has been completely redesigned and it now shares most of its underpinnings with the 300 Series Land Cruiser. Suspension parts, the transmission, and the design of the frame are nearly identical. Most differences come in the form of tuning and wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear wheels). Since the Sequoia is then based on the Tundra, it also gets most of the 300 Series underpinnings. Therefore, the new Sequoia is the closest model to a 300 Series Land Cruiser one can buy in the U.S., although the Land Cruiser is 'likely' to make a return Stateside after leaving in 2021. Anyway, as you may know, the Land Cruiser is widely considered one of the most reliable and capable vehicles ever made. To this date, Toyota is doing everything possible to retain that reputation with every new model.

The benefits, however, do not stop there. The strong ladder frame and solid rear axle provide the Sequoia with the ability to tow 9,520 pounds – a near class-leading number. Furthermore, they make modifying the truck for off-road use and fixing the truck easier and less costly. Granted, there might be a small drop in ride quality, but the vehicle is so well-tuned that you would barely notice it. This concept of platform sharing is becoming more famous as it helps companies save costs in development and production. One single assembly line can build multiple vehicles and engineers only need to design one single platform. From there on, different bodies and slight changes can be made for each specific vehicle.

The Sequoia Is Only Offered As A Hybrid

The new Sequoia only comes as a hybrid, and this is a big positive – especially in the era we are currently living in. The way this powertrain works is by combining an electronically assisted 10-speed automatic transmission with the all-new twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6. Total power output is 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. Yes, even on the base model. So, if you live somewhere like California, you can have peace of mind knowing that your new vehicle is relatively low on emissions and will be able to stay on the road for longer. For comparison, a base model Chevrolet Tahoe only comes with a 5.3-liter V-8, which is both less fuel efficient and less powerful.

A quick play around with the Toyota configurator reveals endless choices when it comes to personalizing your Sequoia. The base model SR5 starts at a very competitive $58,300. For your money, you get the hybrid system, a 10-speed automatic, and the base smaller infotainment system. From there on you can add four-wheel-drive ($3,000) a towing package, or even a TRD off-road package which adds off-road wheels, all-terrain tires, badging, Bilstein off-road suspension, skid plates, a locking rear differential, multi-terrain select, crawl control, and many other features. So, for $63,050 you can have an off-road-ready Land Cruiser-based SUV with a very powerful powertrain. Sounds like a good deal. If you want all the off-road abilities the Sequoia can offer you can choose the TRD Pro model which features more luxuries and technology, and even more off-road abilities thanks to FOX longer internal bypass front shocks and remote reservoir rear shocks. Outside you also get a bumper that offers better approach angles, off-road lighting, unique wheels, badging, and even a roof rack. Interior design is also unique to the TRD PRO and provides a rugged look.

For ultimate luxury, you can choose the Capstone model. Here you get massive 21-inch wheels and options such as rear air suspension. This is something that will come in handy for leveling the truck when it is loaded. The interior is also packed with every single piece of technology on offer and is finished in more premium materials. This is a great option for someone who wants Lexus-like luxury without the Lexus badge or for a lower price tag. For context, the Lexus LX which is also based on the Land Cruiser is about $20,000 more expensive.

Final Thoughts

The new Sequoia offers something most new SUVs don’t. Its strongest selling point is versatility as it provides all the luxuries one would ever need while also being rugged and capable thanks to its legendary underpinnings. Most of its competitors have moved to unibody designs with independent suspension all around which do have their benefits. However, they will never offer the off-road ability and durability of the Sequoia. Furthermore, this is a vehicle that should last for decades as it is built on the most robust platform Toyota currently has on offer.
